John Sundman clearly found it hard to follow up the excellent techno-thriller Acts Of The Apostles but luckily he found some computers had already done the job for him. What Sundman presents us with here are the three winning texts from the (entirely mythical) Hofstadter Prize for Machine Written Narrative. Except two are missing altogether (although one may well indeed have been Acts Of The Apostles itself) and one was stolen by an aberrant cop (possibly Sundman again in one of his many incarnations) from the trunk of his car (which may have been a brand new BMW or a wreck, depending on which unreliable narrative thread you chose to believe). If we are to believe him (any of him), the text that remains was restored from memory by Sundman himself. If we seem to be straying into Paul Auster territory do not fear, because, despite buffer and psychic overloads, we remain in the intermittently trustworthy hands of Sundman himself, one of the few writers on the planet who can make floating-point processors sexy. If it feels like an interlude between more substantial work, or an wayward solo on a recalciatrant synth before we return to the triumphant chorus, it's still enormous fun.
