Decent enough article for the price, ideal really only for steady state cardio work or hiking etc, as there are no chest straps with this model so trying to take a reading is awkward if you are performing high intensity cardio on a cross trainer for instance, not impossible though! But all in all it has all the basic functions necessary, so a solid buy for your first heart rate monitor.

Bought these for the Insanity Workout (Insanity: The Ultimate Cardio Workout and Fitness DVD Programme.) where you need to keep an eye on your maximum heart rate so you don't harm yourself.

The PM 16 is only suitable for people with smaller wrists. It is sized as a "ladies" watch so if you have large wrists it will be too small. The width of the body of the watch is about 35mm. The depth is about 14mm. The flat section that sits on your wrist is about 45mm. Maximum wrist circumference is about 19cm.

The PM 15 is sized as a "man's" watch so if you have small wrists it may be too big. The width of the body of the watch is about 40mm. The depth is about 16mm. The flat section that sits on your wrist is about 50mm. Maximum wrist circumference is about 21cm.

Setting up is very easy: follow the instructions in the box to set your sex and age and the watch will automatically set your maximum safe heart rate and a minimum heart rate for an effective workout. You can change these limits manually if you choose.

In use: Works well once you have got a bit of a sweat up. You need to press a button under the clock face and hold it for about five seconds to get a reading so may not be suitable for people who don't want to stop exercising to check their rate.

It doesn't work terribly well on dry skin or very hairy wrists until you are sweating - you can use it, however, but smearing a thin coating of saliva on the back of the watch (or using using some conductive gel according to the manual). This is why I have not given it 5 stars.

Overall: good enough for the price but would be better if it was able to take your heart rate all the time.

****UPDATE - Important****
Unfortunately the watch failed after about 2 months and would no longer register a heart rate. This is not an isolated event judging by other reviews. I have replaced it with an alternative watch and chest strap for continuous monitoring.

I am afraid I can no longer recommend this item.

I have been interested in fitness for a while now but never gave a second thought to why sometimes I feel dizzy or sick after an intense workout such as long distance or high speed running. After doing some research it turned out that it was all due to me pushing myself too much from time to time. The articles that I have read said that it is important to keep track of your pulse while training to avoid any unpleasant feelings during the workout. That is when I have decided to buy a pulse watch. I almost instantly excluded an option of buying a watch with a chest strap as that seemed quite uncomfortable to me. After searching for a while I came across this product and bought it without thinking about it too much.

Now about the product. The delivery was very prompt. The watch itself is thicker than I thought and looks a bit plasticky but good nevertheless. It does everything that it claims to and does it quite well. Although it sometimes doesn't want to read my pulse for some unknown reasons. Maybe it's because my wrist is a bit too hairy. In the instruction it is said that using a special gel will solve any problem of this sort. Anyway, when the watch does give a measurement it does it very precisely and I mean it! I would say that a standard deviation of the measurement would be +-1-2 beats/min which is nothing.

All in all, it is a nice product which has everything that I need but unfortunately I cannot give it 5 stars as the watch doesn't give pulse measurements every single time, especially when training. I guess I will need to buy that gel and then try its precision. Nevertheless, I would definitely recommend this product. Though please bear in mind that it is my first product of this kind and I cannot compare it to any similar devices.

Bought this watch for my dad as he was keen to have a monitor to use during and after running that did not require a chest strap. He is very happy with the accuracy of the monitor and now uses it every run to keep track of his peeks and resting heart rates.

The one thing you should bear in mind though is this: My dad runs on a treadmill and was hoping to place the watch in one of the cup-holders and only pick it up from time to time to check his heart rate. What makes this tricky is that you need to be touching the metal part of the watch behind the face to get a reading.

I would definately recommend this watch for someone who is looking for a monitor without a chest strap.

It is very accurate and is really good for my husband who has atrial fibrillation,as he can see what his heart beat is when he had a episode, his heartbeat does go off the scale sometimes, and it has been 185 beats a min a quite few times, it reassures him when he can see it slowing down though. Could worry some people I suppose if they see high readings etc

Item works correctly, although as the back of the watch needs contact with the skin, it's difficult to work out which part of the back of the watch does, since it's one big plate.
The watch is comfortable, but as others have reported it's sometimes not enthusiastic about measuring the pulse. Additionally, when measuring twice, the two measurements differ by about 10bpm or other times just 1-2bpm.
The displayed alarm/chrome symbols might be mixed up as the bell shows when the chrome is enabled, when in typical watches the bell shows when the *alarm* is enabled.
However it's packed with features (waterproof, countdown timer, stopwatch, etc) and looks pretty snazzy.

The Monitor has a defect. A defect of the worst kind, it did not function on start-up and still does not function at all.

I thought I was buying German reliability.

Total waste of money.

NOW I LEARN FROM AMAZON THAT IT IS TOO LATE TO SEND IT BACK

Works great. All the functions I expected. Looks good. Build quality is better than the really cheap equivalents you can buy - tried a couple of those, and they just didn't last. Had this for several months now and it still looks and functions as new.

It did what I bought it for, allowing me to monitor my heart rate whilst walking on my treadmill.
Only down side is for anyone like myself who suffers from Tinnitus they will not be able to hear the pulse alarm.
