What a great Hard Drive. Had it about a month now and it has delivered my needs perfectly. Doenst need an external power source which is excellent compared to my hard drives in the past. well designed, compact and light, perfect for travelling with. I shopped around abit and decided to spend the extra cash for this one. TRUST ME, its worth the cash. IOMEGA are the worst...

1.0 out of 5 stars Whatever happened to plug'n'play?
External hard-drives are great. You can load them up with all your files, transport them easily and plug them in to whatever computer you want, in order to work on your files.

Not this one.

This review is from: WD My Passport Essential SE 750 GB Black Portable Hard Drive (USB 3.0/2.0) (Electronics)
External hard-drives are great. You can load them up with all your files, transport them easily and plug them in to whatever computer you want, in order to work on your files.

Not this one.

WD, in their infinite wisdom, decided that being a plain usb mass storage device was not good enough for them. Any time you plug this device into a windows PC it will nag you to install an SES driver. Not very handy of you're using a work, university or public PC and have no chance of installing new drivers. Without the SES driver it may mount as read-only - a problem we haven't managed to fix yet. The WD forums are awash with complaints about this driver nonsense, and the 'unremovable' virtual CD.

On the positive side, it works fine under Linux (Kubuntu 9.10). No driver issues here.

Doenst need an external power source which is excellent compared to my hard drives in the past. well designed, compact and light, perfect for travelling with. I shopped around abit and decided to spend the extra cash for this one. TRUST ME, its worth the cash. IOMEGA are the worst hard drives ever but cheaper, 2 of them have corrupted on me in the past and lost all my data, so the WD brand is worth the extra money.

As for software issues, just don't install any of the preinstalled software, delete it and use it as a normal drag and drop drive. Its THAT simple. Can't believe how many people have moaned about this issue.

Packaging was excellent and arrived exactly on time.

This hard drive is a huge disappointment. The Smartware backup software is complex and did not work. I tried to use the drive for normal storage, but kept getting "write protected". When connected to the computer, it appeared in Windows Explorer as a CD drice with only a few MB of capacity. I am having to return itto the supplier.
