This review is from: Eskmo (Audio CD)
Eskmo is the working name of San Francisco based composer/
producer Brendan Angelides. His debut album is a stunner!

If you enjoyed James Blake's recent release then you will find
much to enjoy here. For my money it blows it out of the water!

Dark electronica; sizzling distortion; ponderous (at times almost
tribal) beats; willfully obscured and ambiguous vocal inventions.
It all adds up to a very heady and exotic listening experience.
Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of fun to me had here too!

'Color Dropping' for example skitters and splutters along like
a young puppy out for its first walk on the end of a lead.
Clunky and funky, it is an unturndownable invitation to dance.

On the other hand 'The Melody' lopes along like an ugly troll
in search of its next meal (Three Billy Goats Gruff perhaps!)

The halting rhythmic progress of 'Starships' grips our imagination
like a short cinematic piece depicting the slow passage of a
space-freighter through one of the more dangerous corners of
a dark and lonely universe. A vividly atmospheric journey.

'Siblings' is a somewhat creepier confection. Above and below the
grumbling bassline the air seems full of fluttering night creatures.
(The kind that get stuck in your hair and leave small scratches on your
ears and neck!) Mr Angelides' creations are nothing if not enchanting.

Of the many treasures on offer, however, 'Gold & Stone' seems to
sum up the album's strange alien physicality. A lumbering Behemoth
of an idea, staggering along whilst crushing small villages to dust
and splinters in its path with every step. A real beast of track.

There is every reason to believe that music of such singular power
and imagination will, nonetheless, disappear without a trace. Such
is the way of the listening world but having found it by chance Eskmo
has now taken up residence in The Wolfcave as a welcome guest.

Highly Recommended.

This review is from: Eskmo (MP3 Download)
Bought this after listening to Cloudlight on youtube several times. Decided to buy the whole out of a sense of duty to support fellow musicians in the age of mp3 downloads. After the first listen I liked the album... After the third listen I completely fell in love with a lot of the tracks and felt that I had a gem in my collection.

This album seriously kicks bum cheeks.

It's very original and the sounds are just soulful and juicy. Deep too.

Tracks like Color Dropping are awesome off beat(3/4), funky, deep examples of what this guy can do.

A well deserved 5-star.
