watch this on a cold winters day
on 27 January 2012
a great film, a cast of major acting talent augmented with character actors/acting apparently not available today (maybe also lack of comparable productions)
the choice of ultra p[anavision 70, robert surtees as d.p and milestone as director, provide a visual feast. the clever use of the wide aspect ratio, pivoting the camera around objects for instance, provides s 3d feeling sometimes. the tank shots , matte shots- special effects all expertly done.
of course, as usual, the script, production design, editing, all make their contribution. the ship built for the film still sailed, until recently, visit tallshipbounty.org. sadly lost in storm sandy in 2012.
i have this edition in r1 and r2. same quality, a very fine transfer, deep blacks. the film looks as though it was filmed recently.
you can see film grain on the impressive titles blue background, so whether blu-ray edition ( even if using a superior master) can really improve on this dvd, i doubt. i hope the movie John Paul Jones gets released in an equally good presentation, one day.
the music by bronislaw kaper is memorable.wonderful.
the special fearures are worth watching. what foresight or luck mgm had in making those shorts :)
the film has humourous moments, one of the few films which for me, merits re-watching. seeing tahiti on a cold gb day, it is worth buying.
