Awesome switch. 10 ports of gigabit layer-3 Cisco goodness. Normally you'd pay a fortune for a layer-3 managed switch. The Cisco SG 300 range changes this. It doesn't support all the Cisco features you'd expect on their enterprise mega-priced switches but it does give a substantial subset of them.

This range is great for hobby enthusiasts, IT guys wanting to play/learn about more commercial networking kit at an affordable price and for full production use.

The two fibre ports can be used as standard ethernet ports meaning you actually do get 10 ports.

It has a serial console at the back which can be used with a terminal emulator to get you out of trouble if you fubar the configuration (easily done if you're messing with vlanning and layer-3 routing). The console commands will be familiar to anyone who has come across Cisco switches before. They're exactly the same.

The web interface is excellent giving easy access to all the configuration functions.

It has a several stage configuration backup system meaning you can revert to previously working configurations very easily if you mess things up.

Has too many features to list here but if you want a professional, flexible, proper layer-3 switch then I highly recommend this. I bought mine for my own use but we've since purchased 4 of these for work. There are larger versions of this switch with more ports and also POE versions available too.

I would certainly buy another one if I had the need. Bargain price for the power.

Not very well written user guide for connection as a L" or L3 switch to external firewall. In itself the usual Cisco quality

I don't know what I was expecting from Cisco, but it was as brilliant as I thought it was going to be. But then, that's what you expect from a Cisco product.

The only thing I would say to people is... if you're not completely network savvy, this switch might be a bit hardcore for you. It's a full managed switch and although it can essentially be used as plug and play, to really get the best from it, you need to log into the interface and configure it.

Also, for some reason that I couldn't explain, the UI (which is HTML based) wouldn't work properly in Internet Exploder(explorer). I had to use FireFox to access the interface properly. (This won't be an issue for most sys admins anyway, but still...)

So 4 stars for unfortunately not working in IE, but apart from that, a very powerful switch with loads of advanced features to please any sys-admin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff from Cisco!, 20 May 2013

Although still expensive when comparing with the rest of the world of switches, Cisco has included a lot of thei powerful functions that we can find on an enterprise level equipment. Intended to be used by small business and may be at home for those who want to use it for studying purposes or just to have a diversity functions not common in most similar home equipment.
It is managed through either a web interface or through the familiar Command Line Interface (for those who know Cisco) although it does not have the famous Cisco IOS as the enterprise leve routers and switches.
If you are about to buy a good switch for a price that approaches this one, then give a little more without hesitation. You will not regret it.
I'm having a bit of trouble understanding how to activate the lifetime warranty (Cisco (in my country) says the re-seller should do it and the re-seller sends me back to Cisco, but I'm sure this will be solved when I have the time to write to Cisco International.
