5.0 out of 5 stars Elegant and pleasing
This is another great 2 CD collection of Bocherini's guitar quintet by Phillips. With over two hours of music ,we get to hear the guitar as the key instrument with orchestral backing. And just like Charles Burney wrote in 1776 'there is perhaps no instrumental music more ingenious, elegant and pleasing than his quintets...' we are treated to the grace and modulation of...

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheap but not cheerful -
I'm usually a sucker for the boxed set, with all its "complete" loveliness, but not in this case. I much prefer to have half the quintets, as recorded in the Narciso Yepes and Melos Quartet (2007) version, which is a crisper, cleaner sound with bags of energy. I found that the guitar was sometimes swamped by the other strings in this version. As this is somewhat a matter...

As this is somewhat a matter of personal taste, I would recommend listening to as many versions as you can before buying, as they do seem to vary a lot in style.

That Boccherini is a great composer who wrote several great works for various instruments is not in doubt, this is exemplified by this collection. The recording is ADD and the orchestra is St Martins in the field conducted by Pepe Romero.

4.0 out of 5 stars Phillip's Boccherini guitar quartets, 24 Nov 2008
By
Anticipating a sugar-icing confection of early-music orchestration with a naive, plink-plonk guitar, I was delighted to find a series of mature concerti where the guitar and the orchestra were well matched, sober, with music showing a destinct romantic-period appeal. I can see Villa-Lobos really appreciating this writing. Those wanting 'lollipops' should avoid this album, but those wanting reflective music could, as I did, well appreciate the product. D Young

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you've seen "Master and Commander" you'll have heard the Captain and his ship's surgeon play other Boccherini compositions. These quintets make very pleasant background chamber music, excellent sound quality.
