A forgotten gem indeed; or rather nearly forgotten by me! Le rouge et le noir is a wonderful book;complex but compelling. This miniseries does the book justice.Of course being a television series it cannot follow the novel strictly to the letter but as a visual interpretation of the novel it is a convincing treat. Clearly money was spent on this production and filmed in France too
Acting, costumes and sets are all magnificent.
Another television version albeit in French is available on Youtube. It is similar and worth watching

Set in post Napoleonic France. The country again has a king, but fears revolution may return. Has anything been learned about the need for those on high to have greater regard for those lower down?

Julien Sorel (Ewan McGregor), of humble origin, vows to make his presence felt - his strengths charisma, ingenuity and a photographic memory. Which offers the better opportunity to advance - the scarlet of the army or black of the church? His hero is Napoleon whose image is rarely far away, ever ready to comment and advise (not always helpfully, it has to be said). Will Sorel succeed, or come to grief? He will encounter duplicity and snobbery - and engage in romances that may prove unwise....

The lavish 1993 production of Stendhal's novel (a faithful adaptation if reports are true). For the second time that year viewers sat up and took note. As in "Lipstick on Your Collar", Ewan McGregor proved an awesome new talent. Here he excels, even delivering fluent Latin as though to the manner born. Other fine performances accompany - including Alice Krige and Rachel Weisz as his lovers, Stratford Johns as the priest who takes him under his wing, T.P. McKenna who entrusts him with a mission that may affect the future of France.

Four fifty minute episodes. No bonuses. Do not worry about this being a Dutch import. All is in English (except for the Latin bits), the Dutch subtitles easily removed on pressing the tab on the two discs' lower right-hand corner.

Although the cast has now aged, this immensely enjoyable serial has not. Those impressed first time round will find memory has played true. Those coming to SCARLET & BLACK for the first time are in for a treat.

Like the previous reviewer, I too remember watching this as a teenager, and falling under the spell of a young Ewan McGregor!

This is a great BBC production with a stellar cast. You cannot go wrong with a gripping story by French novelist Stendhal, beautiful scenery and a big budget BBC production.

This DVD is an import from the Netherlands and the cover is in Dutch, but don't let this put you off buying. The Dutch subtitles are easily turned off, leaving you to enjoy the series in the original English.

Not very enthralling. Not Ewan McGregor's best performance.

Saw this on television, some years back, and it was my first introduction to two people who have gone on to do great things with their careers: Ewan McGregor and Rachel Weisz.
Weisz is gorgeous, in every sense of the word, and it was obvious that she would 'go far'. She's a fine actress, too! ( Or should that be 'actor', these politically-correct days?). Sorry Ian, you're good but it was the charms of Rachel that did it for me!
