A really good keyboard
on 19 March 2013
The K800 is a very nice wireless keyboard. It has rechargeable batteries that are user replaceable and the keyboard charges via USB. The keyboard connects to the PC wirelessly via Logitech's unifying receiver, which allows you to connect multiple supported devices using just one receiver. The build quality and feel of the keyboard is good, although I wouldn't really call it "premium".
The illumination is a key feature. There's 4 different brightness levels, or you can disable it completely. The keyboard has a motion sensor built into it, so you can set it so that the illumination turns on when it detects your hands near to the keyboard, then it'll turn off again after a few seconds when you move your hands away. You can also set it so that the illumination only activates when you start typing. It works really well and definitely adds value.
The keyboard's function keys all have secondary functions, for instance, you can launch your web browser or email client. There are also dedicated volume buttons, a mute button, and a button that launches the calculator in Windows. Much of this functionality can be customised via SetPoint, which is a nice feature.
If you're running Windows 8, I would advise installing version 6.32 of SetPoint rather than the latest version, which is a little buggy. 6.32 works OK.
All in all, I think this is a good product, although I think the price of entry is a little too high. If you took the illumination away, this keyboard would be worth maybe £20-£30 and I don't think the illumination adds £50+ of value, but considering that there are virtually no good alternatives to this keyboard on the market, if you want a keyboard with illumination then this is the one to go for.
