1958 Vintage Chuck, all self penned and a smattering of bona-fide classics as per usual. This was his second album and was the real breakthrough for him. There are a few hits on this album ( especially Sweet Little Sixteen and Rock & Roll Music) . It's the "Filler" that is the Killer here for me! "Oh Baby Doll," another teenage anthem could of been a smash hit and Berry shows that he can break away from the greatest formula in rock to show some other sides to his music. There's several interesting instrumentals plus a smooth talking Chuck on "La Jaunda (Espanol)" makes you imagine Chuck in a Hawaiian shirt, no shoes, playing a ukulele perched in a palm tree to a doll in a Grass Skirt! Just remember when bands get together in the garage to learn rock and roll they learn from the Chuck Berry songbook. I've always been spellbound by his apparently effortless, yet uncannilly rhythmic lyrics. Real underrated lyricist IMHO. Without him where would Keith Richards have gotten all his guitar licks. These albums are still masterpieces and a huge cultural significance as the Superb new BBC4 Documentary about Rock n Roll testifies. This Vip Vop Lp is well up to their usual standards, beautiful sleeves, an informative insert and nicely mastered vinyl, these sound punchy and crisp, and Chuck's Gibson is Singing like a Bird! To quote John Lennon..."if you had to give rock and roll another name it would be Chuck Berry. 5/5

I bought this CD hoping to get a good reproduction of Chuck's original album in CD form. The tracks are not remastered (and they don't claim to be), but two or three are so badly reproduced, they are unlistenable. I don't mind a little bit of hiss, but this is really bad - I'm sure they could have found a better original copy than the one they used. I don't think even die-hard Berry fans would be happy with this CD...

Chuck Berry the story teller of '50's teen life.
Although he was almost thirty when he wrote his first classic songs he understood what 'Teens' wanted to hear.
He took over the perfect band and made the sound his.
With Johnny Johnson on piano and Willie Dixon on bass he added his unique style of guitar playing to create the exciting Rock'n'Roll classics that influenced so many players including Eric Clapton, Keith Richards on so on.
I had the vinyl album way back when and it was 'lost' at a party!
Even the sleeve evokes memories!
Listen to the early versatility of Chuck, enjoy!!!
