5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Else Like It, 4 Feb 2013

This is 2-step/dub-step chillout at it's best and I don't know of anything else like it. Almost every track is a must have, especially "Losing You" "Delusions" "Mantra" and the absolutely brilliant "Badman." This is the best new music I have heard in years.

Not a long review, but this is a brilliant album. Mellow, easy to listen to, tuneful, rhythmic. I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Varied, Emotional and Basstastic, 28 Oct 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fallen Light (Audio CD)
Fallen Light, I'll admit, was a tad disappointing at first. I only REALLY liked four songs but after multiple listens the albums complexity began to shine through.

Fallen Light is Phaeleh as usual, his beats are absolutely epic (short of Sundown) rims, snares and a variety of ethnic instruments work together to create a detailed soundscape of percussion. And then the big drums (as on Badman) are just.... wow... it's one of those noises you have to hear to believe. His use of strings and piano again are as usual, emotive and most certainly not amateurly thrown together, Phaeleh is a man who understands past, present and most certainly the future of music. Bass is definitely as usual, big and expertly-used, though a Willow-esque track that damages the structural integrity of your house would have been nice.

There are however some big changes, on the one hand there are the two Soundmouse tracks, the vocal work is spectacular and add a whole new level of depth to Phaeleh's music, and on the other hand is every other song with vocals; gone are the days when vocals were used with restraint and in variation, on Fallen Light they feel rather thrown in and repetitive, yes the few vocal samples are expertly chosen for their respective songs but they do grow a tad stale after six or so minutes... also a song with Anneka would have been appreciated as her contributions are always spectacular.
Another change is in the ambient noise, his past albums had far more interesting ambience and Fallen Light has a tendency to rely on the vocals, beats and bass with alot of reverb on them, which is fine but again adds a feeling that many of the songs are a tad repetitive.
Another gripe I have is with Sundown; as in, it's not very good... hopefully one of those one-time mistakes artists make from time to time and don't look back on...

Highlights of the album are, as stated, both tracks with Soundmouse. Also Ghosts Of Memories, an eery piece that feels rather Burial-ey but still keeps the big Phaeleh bass. And Losing You and Delusions, the very listenable, very emotive Phaeleh-as-usual pieces.

All in all this may sound rather negative, but all that is wrong with this album is much of what Phaeleh changes, a house beat, diminished ambience and lack of refinement of vocals tarnish an otherwise perfect. I would give it four stars, but then I realise the variety; House, Dubstep, Garage, Breakbeat, Burial-esque ambience... there is something here for any electronic music fan to appreciate and so I proudly award five stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart Centered Light, 22 April 2013
This review is from: Fallen Light (MP3 Download)
"Fallen Light" by Phaeleh is a relaxing cd that combines chillout sounds with synth-pop melodies. "Afterglow" by Phaeleh & Soundmouse, "Mantra", "Plateau", and "Breathe In Air" by Phaeleh & Soundmouse are among the multiple songs that are both soothing and satisfying. "Fallen Light" by Phaeleh is a suitable collection for those who like chillout collections that blend pop elements from the 90's and the millennium.
