Oh what a good disc we have here! The words used by Gidon Kremer to introduce the spirit of this project are moving, and the high value of music as a food for soul comes out so intrestingly. The most striking feature of the disc, for me, comes with the first track,Scene with Cranes by Sibelius;I always considered Sibelius as a great musician, but quite a relic from romantic era in the 20th century. This piece, instead, sounds so modern and makes for a great introduction to the climate built up by the remaining tracks, which span from Schubert(1813) to Lera Auerbach(2009). Some tracks are quietly flowing( Nyman, Piazzolla...), others rather anguished(Auerbach,Schnittke...), but each one takes to the surface a treasure which is inside the composer, and pushes us to take out our treasures.
As Kremer says, music is far more precious than oil ( oil is used as a symbol of inner energy that can serve the people in this compilation, and in its beautiful, typically ECM, cover graphics),and this disc is far more precious that the umpteenth Beethoven's Fifth.
