4.0 out of 5 stars A good way to help reduce mud on full-sus mountain bikes
A good way to help reduce mud on full-sus mountain bikes. Works better than the usual seat post mounted mud guard on full-sus bikes as can have smaller clearance. A little bit more fiddly to fit though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but a good solution for full sus frame, 7 May 2013

I've tried a few mudgards for the rear wheel on a full sus frame and none have been great. This one could do with an inch or so more coverage and like a previous reviwer also had to be inventive with the installation. However I was impressed with the design in particlular the fact that it allows for brake/gear cables to pass through the mounts. Overall the best I've had and could be perfect for the right frame.

The product is well described on the bikeradar website. I agree with their review in that the coverage is not good. I, and my seat pack end up plastered in mud.

Second point is that the description is misleading. The item does NOT fir the range of stays quoted. The guard comes with two sets of straps that fit round the stays or forks, listed as A and B in the instructions. Also included are two sets of shims, labelled C and D. The range of stays the guard will fit with strap a is from 17mm, (using shim C), to 26mm. Using strap B, the range is from 32mm, (using shim D), to 41mm without any shim. There is an intermediate position using shim C, so that the range with strap B is from 32mm to 41mm.

This means that there is a gap in the range of fits from 26mm to 32mm. This is where my full-suss MTB sits. It is possible to bodge the fit using a portion of old inner tube so that is will fit, but considering how poorly it does the job, I wouldn't bother. It isn't possible to improve the coverage by moving it closer to the tyre without impeding mud clearance of the tyre.

It's sad that such a promising looking solution for an MTB to be such a failure. If I rode a hardtail, there are better solutions than this, such as a Crudcatcher. For a full-suss, where the wheel position changes they aren't ideal. This should have been, but isn't.

Save your money, and don't buy. Use the cash to buy a waterproof cover for a back pack. That way, your expensive pack WILL stay clean.
