5.0 out of 5 stars WESTERN HEROES VOL 2 EXCELLANT VALUE
The three films are each worth purchasing ,but three in one package put them in the excllant value bracket.I would say that no-one would be disappointed by the entertainment provided.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well, two out of three.....
A decent John Sturges western, a better-than-average Murphy outing and a sadly dated cavalry saga make up this trilogy of Western Heroes. Backlash, with the ever reliable Richard Widmark, is a tough and taut revenge drama, spectacularly photographed and packed with typical Sturges drive.

The three films are each worth purchasing ,but three in one package put them in the excllant value bracket.I would say that no-one would be disappointed by the entertainment provided.

1 The Glory Guys

Not a film that I was familiar with before purchase. The plot is a general view of cavalry life in the mid-west in the 1870s.This interwoven with a love triangle situation which does not overpower the main story -line which is a General Custer type leader who seeks personal glory in a way which is so reckless that it ultimately fatal for him and the vast majority of his command.Tom Tryon is the carear officer who seeks to put duty above personal safety and survives the catastrophe.

The actors are good ,picture quality top-notch in colour, the production values could hardly be bettered and the story is told in a simple , pleasing way.

2 Bullet For a Badman

A later Audie Murphy actioner in colour.Story-line is simple enough.Recovery of bank money following a hold-up.The film comes to life because of the interaction between Murphy and Darren McGiven, the outlaw leader with whom Murphy has previous "history".Other characters have a different agenda.

3 Backlash

A mid 50S colour actioner with Richard Widmark at the height of his powers! What more could you want!.A good revenge western with a strong cast and excellant production -values.

John McIntyre is a constant joy ina ll westerns ,but is p articularly good in this .

Audie Murphy seldom sets the sagebrush alight but Bullet for a Badman is well scripted and has a strong co-star in Darren McGavin. Certainly it's the best of the later Murphys and moves at a fair clip.

Disappointment of the trio is The Glory Guys, which does not stand the time test. Although quite lavish and surprisingly boasting Sam Peckinpah as writer, it tries a feeble nod towards John Ford cavalry epics and falls on its sabre. Tom Tryon is an okay lead (he made a much better novelist), but the real embarrassment is James Caan's supposedly comical Irish rogue and dialogue to make you squirm.

This collection includes three good westerns. I liked Backlash best, but the other two are also quite good. Backlash has Richard Widmark as a hero. He is my favorite westerners. The story is perhaps not water-tight, but it does not matter. Donna Reed is very beautiful! So is Senta Berger in The Galry Guys. She has two fine suitors (Tom Tryon, Harve Presnell). Perhaps this is the weakest one because of its traditional story of indians and soldiers having romantic problems. It helps that this has been filmed in Mexico and there quite large armies fighting. Thus it looks more realistic. The Bullet for a Badman is one of the best Audie Murphy films. Story is good and Audie is a better actor than is believed. Daren McGavin is also good in this film.
