1.0 out of 5 stars but the actors were appalling and the direction worse.
the only film worth watching was Cross of Iron. The other two were complete rubbish from an acting point of view. There was nothing wrong with the stories - well almost nothing, but the actors were appalling and the direction worse.

A very decent box set that can be picked up for a snip. It includes one of my all time favourite war films with Sam Peckinpah's World War Two epic of the Eastern front "Cross of Iron", unusually featuring the Germans as the main protaganists. James Coburn plays the cynical Sergeant Steiner attempting to lead his small group of men from behind the onward rushing Russian lines. He clashes with the aristocratic Prussian officer Captain Stransky, played by Maximillian Schell who covets Steiner's iron cross. The film heads to a brilliant climax where we are shown how the iron cross is worn.

Then we have Quentin Tarantino's typically oddball offering "Inglourious Basterds". The deliberate spelling mistakes explained by the fact Tarantino's inspiration was from Enzo G Castellari's macaroni combat film "The Inglorious Bastards". Which also tells us that the third film "Eagles Over London" is not a random inclusion as the director was......yup you have guessed it, Mr Castellari no less. Tarantino seems to love all things Italian. He has long admired spaghetti westerns and clearly loves the Italian macaroni combat/war films as well. He interviews Castellari on the Eagles DVD. In "Inglourious Basterds" Brad Pitt leads a group of US Jewish soldiers in a mission to exterminate Nazi leaders. Tarantino is not everyones cup of tea. The gratuitous violence and jewish references can begin to grate a bit, but on the whole it is certainly an entertaining enough watch. Christoph Waltz steals the acting honours as the Nazi Hans Landa.

Definitely the weakest film by some distance is the Italian "Eagles Over London". This time the Italians fading Hollywood star being Van Johnson. The film follows the attempts of a group of German officers to sabotage British radar systems during the Battle of Britain. The film has a whole smorgasbord of inaccuracies. We have the usual grim dubbing, some confusion over who piloted what planes, the strange London scenes showing the Post Office tower and the very dry Italian locations substituting for England. Must have been a very dry summer? As for the white cliffs, they didn't feature at all. The only real plus side is that the film does have some impressive looking crowd scenes. It is perhaps more of an interesting curiosity than a decent film experience. However that said the box set itself represents good value. For war film buffs you have one classic, one decent watchable film, and one turkey. Overall pretty good hence the 4 stars.
