5.0 out of 5 stars It's still good news!!!
So finally after the best part of a decade, Huey & the boys(*cough* men)are back with this cooking album of mephis soul covers.

While hardcore fans will know that the band has been paying tribute to this kind of music(as well as early rock 'n' roll & r&b) since their early days this will be news to some people/casual music fans.

Soulsville really...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
As a fan of Huey Lewis and the News for most of my life I have enjoyed their music greatly. This is an album of old Soul music (stax label) and although the music is not my style I bought this CD and listened anyway. Not their best album by my standards but if you enjoy Soul music I have heard many great reviews from the people who grew up with this style.

Soulsville really gets to show off the bands chops, which are better than ever after some 30 odd years and part of the reason the album works so well is due to the decision to not cover the classics from the Stax vaults but rather some more obscure gems that a lot of people will be discovering for the first time.

Stand out tracks include, Never Like This Before (easily one of the band's most rousing numbers), Respect Yourself, I Want To Do Everything For You and Just One More Day.

A great album, not only for News fans but also for fans of soul music and good music in general.

It may have taken 9 years since their last album, but hey, who cares. Not a bad song on the album. Go on spend a bit of cash and treat yourself.

Huey Lewis And The News - Soulsville (W.O.W. / Proper)
Nine years since their last record, Huey Lewis And The News return with an album of Stax soul covers, which isn't too much of a departure; Lewis has been playing these songs, or songs in this style, since his days gigging around the bars of San Francisco back in the mid `70s.

Lewis' enthusiasm for the material is one of the reasons that Soulsville works so well, though another important element is the song selection, which generally avoids the bleedin' obvious. Upbeat numbers like "Little Sally Walker" and "Never Like This Before" allow The News to show off their chops, though they're in fine form throughout the album, and appear to understand the material just as well as their leader.

Whether Soulsville will strike a chord with younger listeners is anyone's guess. Fortunately for Lewis and The News, there's no shortage of older fans to pick up the slack, and they'll find much to enjoy here. 7/10.
