5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant compilation
If you ever want to know why us oldies harp on about how music was better in the old days, then listen to this fantastic compilation..
This collection had me when it started with Syl Johnson's "We Did It". Believe it or not folks, this is what dance music used to sound like..
This album is the ideal combination - incredibly funky rhythm tracks combined with...

2.0 out of 5 stars They'll tell you anything to get your money
Southern Soul? I thought Fontella Bass was from Chicago but whatever this isn't an essentiial collection.Unless thats the meaning of crossover-you know from North to South
The idea of 2 stars is because I don't like the idea of it-that there are about 20 of these Backbeat CDs of funk and deep soul both genres of which I detest.I just wondered whether there was any...

If you ever want to know why us oldies harp on about how music was better in the old days, then listen to this fantastic compilation..
This collection had me when it started with Syl Johnson's "We Did It". Believe it or not folks, this is what dance music used to sound like..
This album is the ideal combination - incredibly funky rhythm tracks combined with sweet strings and soulful vocals.. combine that with well written songs with killer choruses .. really what else could you possibly need?
The album pulls together tracks from 3 Southern labels, mainly from the seventies, and doesn't have a bad track on it..and all for an incredibly cheap price.
For a soul fan it has some tracks you will own already, but a lot that you won't...
For any artist or musician starting out in music they should take this album as a GCSE...
Bless you Bobbys Mcclure, Patterson and all the other artists for brightening my day..

4.0 out of 5 stars Good compilation!, 26 Jan. 2011

If, like me, you are a soul/funk/disco music "collector" of sorts, you will find this CD a refreshing addition to your collection... there are a number of hard to find tracks on here and all in all it is a very pleasant listen, with some of the tracks being the kind you tend to go back to over and over...

Excellent value for money, and well worth a listen or ten!

This is a fine compilation, I came across by accident; competitively priced, it showcases, excellently, the nature of Southern Soul: those wonderful, beautifully-orchestrated, seductive, Southern Soul tones. A wonderful purchase for any fan of this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crossover Grooviness, 20 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Something for every one of a Soulful bent. Barely a duff track here. Dancers, ballads, deep Soul, big names, funkiness it's all here. Makes one's heart positively soar. If you can't get your groove on to this then take up train spotting. If you are stuck on one of the sub genres of Soul, try this crossroads and I guarantee it will lead you on a voyage of discovery and adventure.

A fine selection of '60s and '70s American soul that I never have heard before. To be honest, I have not heard about the majority of the artists either. Well compiled, good songs and great sound at a bargain price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep 'em coming Backbeats, 14 Feb. 2011
Another very good compilation from Backbeats.

26 tracks for under a fiver? This is simply terrific value for money.

Some choice cuts to be had here. In truth, there are no duds just a fine selection of very nice Soulful material.

The final track, the exquisite "Look at the boy" by Jean Plum should be in your collection should you have even a passing interest in Soul music. It's a Willie Mitchell produced masterpeice.

At the price, yopu can't go wrong with the Backbeats series and this has been excellent. Mostly new tracks for me and have really enjoyed. Fave is the great Ann Peebles with "I didn't take your man".

5.0 out of 5 stars A essential buy, 15 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An absolutely first rate compilation of gems from the golden era of soul music, for less than a fiver!

Possibly the best of the series (not everyone will agree) - but if you aren't buying all of them, make sure you get this one.
