5.0 out of 5 stars Maintains the standard of this superb series
This is the fourth and final story in Ann Cleeves's Shetland Quartet, and Perez is on his home territory of Fair Isle, to take his fiancee, Fran to meet his parents. The murder of a woman in Fair Isle's bird observatory during a period of particularly turbulent weather means that Perez has to begin his investigations alone because it isn't possible to call on help from...

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear
I've really enjoyed the Shetland series thus far, but it all goes wrong when Jimmy Perez returns to his native Fair Isle, with his fiancee Fran, to visit his parents. Then someone is found stabbed and as the weather is too bad to bring in more people Perez must investigate on his own.

One of the most pronounced and unusual things about the preceding three...

5.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling, 17 July 2011

Unfortunately I read this book not realising it was the last in a series. But it was fabulous, atmospheric and almost mesmeric. The sense of claustrophobia in the shut-in community is intense. I had no idea either of the two events that happened after the murder were going to happen. Each of the characters is well drawn and Ann Cleeves really takes you inside their heads. This is the best sort of detective novel, where the detective's own life is integral to the story.Highly recommended.

Latest or last (?) novel in this series about Shetland detective Jimmy Perez was an excellent read. keeps you guessing right until the end. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this series of 4 books by the author. Usually with this type of story you have an inkling of who the killer will be; not this time; I had to keep reading late into the night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Major writer at the height of her powers., 9 Sep 2010
Billed as the final instalment of `the Shetland Quartet', this latest outing for that admirable cop Jimmy Perez sees him returning with his beloved Fran to his native Fair Isle. An atmosphere of claustrophobia and menace is established right away as their small plane suddenly drops down, and the mood becomes even more intense once a woman is murdered on the island.- with feathers threaded through her hair.
The victim is Angela, a scientist and well-known expert on ornithology, who is married to the much older Maurice; between them, the couple ran the island's field centre. We are confronted with a classic `closed circle' mystery - the killer must be one of a limited number of suspects on the island, and it falls to Jimmy to find out who has killed Angela and why. But the case is complex, and others will die before the culprit is unmasked. Ann Cleeves won the CWA Gold Dagger for the first book n the Shetland series, Raven Black, but this impressive book is, to my mind, even better. The ending is poignant and unforgettable, and the novel as a whole is the work of a major writer at the height of her powers.
