5.0 out of 5 stars First Class
As a child growing up I had always dismissed Chaplin as being a division below other Black and White legends such as 'Laurel and Hardy' or 'Buster Keaton'. Somehow Chaplin never quite caught my imagination until one Saturday evening the BBC showed 'Modern Times' and I had the cobwebs of ignorance blown away in one fell swoop. I went on to watch the rest of the BBC's...

This is a good Charlie Chaplin film with his usual comic acts and expressions. However it is not as good as "the Tramp" or The Police, but better than "The Great Dictator", since the latter is a talking film with very little Chaplin comedy in it and a boring story that is far too long. I aim to see more of his other earlier films in the future as I believe...

5.0 out of 5 stars A film of madness and machines from the comedy legend!, 28 July 2000
By A Customer
Charlie won great reviews after he presented Modern Times to the world. Made in 1936, this film about the tramp finding employment in a machine factory, is a masterpiece! As with many of his later films, Charlie made Modern Times to make a point, in this case about young men working with machines that did just one job and how this constant repitition could damage the workers health. This film is one of Chaplin's greatest and one that is watchable again and again! The laughter roles along with every scene! A MUST buy!

In my view Chaplin is extremely overrated. He was a one-trick pony with only one character who has a well-defined silly walk. Don't get me wrong, he was very good at this, but there is no range to it.

Many reviews claim that Modern Times critiques industrial society. It doesn't really. It's just sentimental slapstick, a loosely connected selection of skits. The funniest scenes are in the factory and are connected with food. Everything else is quite boring. Chaplin's wife is pretty, but can't act for toffee.

Overall: sporadically funny slapstick interspersed with horribly sentimental scenes, lacking the depth that many pretentious film critics claim for it.
