I was put on to this record by Hans Peters, a Detroit audiophile who recommended it highly. I was not misled. This CD exemplifies the cool West Coast scene but in a European context. There are shades of Curthis Counce's trumpet player Jack Sheldon as the tracks bring back those memories of the Barclay Sessions. One of the best periods of Baker's recording career, highly recommended.

Recorded in the mid 1950s in Paris this shows Chet at his best. This single cd apparently compiles tracks from 4 discs covering these sessions. It's mainly quartets with piano, bass and drums support and I think he's at his best with these small groups. His trumpet playing was really on top form at this period and although his voice is as good as it ever was I'm not a fan of his singing and I'm glad he doesn't sing much on this recording!

This is music which exudes 'cool', definitely up there with Chet's best. Every note played is the right note- his improvisation is flawless on this record. Always one of the few players to value melody over intricacy and this is made magical by the tone in these sessions- classic Chet. So smooth but with so much feeling, nobody quite like him.

From the opening notes of the first piece (Alone Together), I was hooked. Never a great fan of jazz, this is a wonderful example of Baker's music. Recorded in the 1950s when Baker moved to Paris it is as relevant today as it was then. The tracks, only previously available on five deleted LPs, are brought together here for your delectation. The whole album lasts about an hour. Played softly wonderful seduction music!
