5.0 out of 5 stars EDNA AND HARVEY BREAK OUT, 21 Feb 2011

EDNA AND HARVEY BREAK OUT

This is a point and click adventure game from a German company, Daedalic. You play in third person with your avatar either Edna or occasionally Harvey (blue soft toy). The game starts with Edna in a padded cell of an asylum with no memory of how or why she is there and the object is to escape the asylum and remember the past events that brought her there.

Along the way you will meet several characters connected to the asylum, inmates and employees, all with quirks.

This is a game to take your time and do lots of unlikely things like talking to inanimate objects. Most objects give some response, very likely a humorous one. Exhaust all dialogues, again there are humorous responses tucked away, waiting to be discovered. Everything is mouse-driven in the game.

The game takes a few seconds to save and load. I had a couple of freezes during play at a screen showing lots of monitors. I killed the game using windows task master and reloaded to continue. Apart from that, everything ran as expected.

Because of the lack of information given at game start the drip feed of small nuggets of intelligence on playing through kept up interest right to the end. I thought the ending was a little sad and more realistic than the preceding gameplay would have suggested. Still, no game is perfect.

The game uses cartoon graphics throughout. The style reminds me of the cartoonist "Larry" and a bit of "The Simpsons". Characters are voiced throughout, and well done. Music and sound effects are also well done. Movement and animations ran smoothly. No technical problems were encountered.

Puzzles I rate as easy to medium. The clues to solve them are there, provided you recognise them. I did not require a walkthrough. There is an English walkthrough which became available on the day I completed the game.

Game length is a pleasing 20+ hours.

Summarising, this is a really good game, with a good few laughs and well worth the effort. Who says the Germans don't have a sense of humour? I fully recommend this game.

I played the collectors edition (which included a soundtrack CD and an A2 poster) under win 7.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old school adventure with a few flaws, 1 Jun 2012

The Good: Touching storyline; witty humor, massive interactivity, huge space to explore.
The Bad: Clunky interface; tedious dialogues, too time consuming to move from one place to rhe other, frustratingly difficult at times.
I would anyway recommend it, especially to fans of those old Lucasarts adventures.

Absolutely mad game and not very pc. Enjoyable storyline and not too challenging tasks. I do hate it when the puzzles aren't based in logic but these were. A different and unusual game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, fun game, 12 Jun 2013

This game took a long time to play as we found it extremely difficult - some of the combinations are not at all obvious so the walkthrough had to be used occasionally. However it was a lot of fun with well acted characters and good dialogue. You're completely lost at first about what's going on but gradually things become clearer and there's a large number of items to collect and places to walk around. The main problem that stops the game getting 5 stars is that there seems to be an awful lot of backtracking and I did get fed up of endlessly going in and out of the same rooms. Also having to click on the verb selection in order to do an action gets a bit clunky. The ending is a bit strange but understandable.

I liked this game. It's just a little bit off-the-wall and the characters are just strange enough to keep the attention. I'm glad I bought it and I enjoyed playing it.
