This review is from: Hey, Beach Girls!: Female Surf 'N' Drag 1961-1966 (Audio CD)
Another superb girl comp from Ace and though not their best is certainly one of their most fun. This comp covers the period from 1963-66 and includes the known: Donna Loren, the I can't believe it: The Supremes, the international: Little Pattie & Les Gams & the downright obscure: Susan Lynne.

Standouts include the stomping 'Drag Race Johnny' by Australia's Little Pattie & The Statesman. The frenetic, almost garage sound of Hal Blaine & The Cougar's 'Dance With The Surfin' Band.' Susan Lynne's 'Don't Drag No More' starts off as a pastiche of Jan & Dean's 'Dead Man's Curve', however the gorgeous, plaintiff chorus provided by The Angels (yes them) transforms it into a lost girl group classic. Cameo's top RnB vocal group The Orlons do a credible version of perennial fave Surfin'. Jack Nitzshe's wife Gracia sings lead on The Westwood's effortlessly cool 'Will You Love Me...'. The comp ends on a novelty number written by Jeff Barry and sung by his soon to be wife Ellie Gee (best known as Ellie Greenwich)- it's disposable but fun.

Annoyingly, Ace has re-cycled a few tracks from some of their other comps, notably The Brian Wilson comp which I suspect most surf fans will have picked up but for those who just buy Ace girl comps it will (I think) all be new.

As on all Ace releases, well all the ones I own, sleeve notes and sound are superb.
