Great reggae songs,

If you like such great old British songs and you even like reggae, you must listen and appreciate this record of Ali Campbell. Some of them are better and nicer than the original.

Wonderful CD - Not enough songs on it though,

This third solo offering from the main main of UB40 brings us 12 of his favourite classic songs in his own unique style.I opted for the two disc version which is the CD+DVD. It was the same price as the standard version so I thought i'd go for that. The only problem with this album is I find there isn't enough songs on it. Ali picked 12 but really, I enjoyed the CD so much I really could've done with more songs on the CD. 12 isn't simply enough for an album of this high standard. Each song has that Ali magic. Great vocals and a great overall production. Memories of UB40 all the way through from start to finish. Any fan of UB40 will love this album. If not, then there is something wrong with you all.

This is the only solo album of Ali's I have bought (I have most of UB40's albums - some even on vinyl!!), I'm not sure I will buy any of the others, its just not the same..... Having said that, I also have UB's 1st album without Ali, again just not the same - they all belong together

This is an okay album - not as good as Ali Campbell's other solo albums, but it's pleasant enough to play in the background.

Awesome!,

This album is absolutely fab! I bought it on Friday and I have listened to it 5 or 6 times already! Ali's choice in the songs for the album was an extremely wise one! He has put in the unique sound of Reggae and made them his own in the style that we all love! In my opinion Ali Campbell is under-rated!! I own ALL the UB40 Albums and Ali's 4 solo albums; Big Love, Running Free, Flying High and Great British Songs and I listen to them endlessly!! Anyway, if you are contemplating buying this album then please please go ahead and buy it as you will NOT be disappointed!! WELL DONE SIR ALI CAMPBELL :-)

I bought the standard edition without the bonus DVD. Oddly, the price was the same for both editions, but I'm not interested in the DVD, only the actual music. Many of the songs are by Ali's favorite oldie artists and he clearly enjoyed making this album. The set opens with Got to get you into my life (a Beatles-penned song that became a UK top ten hit for Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers in 1966 before the Beatles included their own version on Revolver), which is followed by Paint it black (Rolling Stones), He ain't heavy he's my brother (Hollies), Love is the drug (Roxy Music), Honky tonk women (Rolling Stones), Carrie Anne (Hollies), You wear it well (Rod Stewart), Squeeze box (Who), All right now (Free), You really got me (Kinks), A hard day's night (Beatles) and Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty). Ali does full justice to these classic songs, as the reggae beat adds a new twist to the songs while retaining the spirit of the original versions. Perhaps the most surprising inclusion is Baker Street, in which Ali wisely found a saxophonist who was able to do Raphael Ravenscroft`s parts well. Ali clearly knows that the saxophone is an important part of this hit and didn't change those parts, yet still managed to add a reggae beat without spoiling the track. Most impressive. It might even be my favorite track here but I'm not sure, as I'm actually impressed with the album all the way through. |
