Good effort but ultimately feels hollow.

The Loved Ones is a decent Aussie horror, shot really well and good production values, but it is a strange beast. Strange because it works and it doesn't, it feels quite hollow and predictable. Basically this is an up to date version on CARRIE with a few spins. Good looking guy rejects geeky girl to the dance and so with the help of her dad they kidnap him and then proceed to torture him. Can he escape? And really that's all there is to the movie. But it is enjoyable and catches you out with how dark it becomes in the final two acts. The parellel running story of the slighly geek guy who gets the beautful women and it all works out is quite funny and ironic but then again not much happens in this story arc. Considering the budget and the effort put in, this is a good movie but the DVD blurb suggesting masterpiece is well wide of the mark.
