This album seems to have been released several times over the past year, but it's back for another go, as the multi-national, classic rock combo attempt to crack the big time. Their raison d'etre seems to be to bring the classic rock and metal sounds of the eighties bang up to date, in an attempt to pretend that the evil grunge never existed.

Do they manage it? Well, um, not really. It's a bit hit and miss, and for every bout of full-on headbanging there's a dull ballad that makes you wish for that nice James Blunt fella to make a new record. You also have to bear in mind that Emerald are deadly serious about what they do. They're no Darkness. However, when a song like 'Help Me Believe' happens along, you can forgive them a lot of things as it's just so gosh darned metallicious. That's also true of 'Freedom Of Desire' and 'Make It Alone'.

Shame then that a lot of the songs aren't really up to scratch with the big ballad, 'Broken', actually dire enough to cause real, physical pain. There is a good EP in here, and the band (half of whom have left since it was recorded) are good enough musicians. Maybe they just overstretched themselves first time out, because there is enough here to suggest that they could produce something good.

Stick to downloading the best tunes, and keep an eye out for whatever happens next.
