Lacking in Sparkle
on 25 October 2010
Now we were all SO excited a year ago at the news that VW was doing a Christmas special after a few years away from TV comedy. Cleverly timed leaks from the BBC assured us of hilarious insights into Bo Beaumont's life after 'Acorn Antiques', and a side-splitting send-up of 'Lark Rise to Candleford'.
Shame that excitement was somewhat deflated when the show was actually aired as this definitely wasn't anywhere near as good as the all-time classic 'All-Day Breakfast' (AND WHERE THE HELL IS THAT ON DVD, I ASK FOR THE 54th TIME!!). It wasn't even as good as the somewhat hit-and-miss 'All the Trimmings', which is saying something.
This definitely lacks the verve of VW's wickedly absurd observations that she is famous for - the 'Lark Rise' send-up quickly becomes tired and is featured FAR too much in this 60 minute offering, almost to the point of dullness. Similarly, the Bo Beaumont expose could have been much funnier - Julie Walters seems strangely under-par and at a loss with how to make the script come alive - however, the Delia Smith moment is a real classic!!
This must be the only VW show which feels longer than it is, and ultimately comes across as somewhat uninspired and ill-advised. Yes, there ARE some good chuckles, but much fewer and farther between than usual. There is simply a lack of SPARKLE here, and signs that Wood had spent a little too much time away from comedy writing allowing some stodgy complacency to creep in.
Oh, and it has to be said - DREADFUL cover!
