Nortec has done an interesting job in appropriating, remixing and disseminating the everyday sounds of Northern Mexican landscapes. The result is that such sounds seem increasingly acceptable to urban global listeners who have no particular attachment to/interest in Northern Mexican cultures. We might think of this as an extractive transcultural operation based on pure aestheticism. But let's not be so cold and cerebral. The aestheticism works in many ways. It moves you as it makes you move. It gives you nostalgia and a deeply enjoyable sense of irony as well. Aesthetically, I would say it works.
