This review is from: Sings Harlan Howard (Audio CD)
When the subject of Country songwriters comes up, the first name most people think of is Harlan Howard. It wasn't always thus, and back in 1961 when Buck Owens recorded this tribute album, Harlan still had to work hard pitching songs to A&R men.
But Buck knew, better than most, what great material Harlan had produced, and whilst Foolin' Around is the track most people identify as a Buck/Harlan collaboration, there are many others. Fortunately, this CD includes them and it is a treat.
Buck sung Harlan better than most performers, and if you listen to Heartaches by the Number, Pick Me Up on Your Way Down, and The Key is in the Mailbox, you will understand just what I mean. Even Ray Price or Charlie Walker didn't better these versions.
This was quite early in Bucks career, but he had hit his stride, the sound was there, the wonderful twangy telecaster of Don Rich, and those vocals, edgy and perfectly harmonised.
Nearly 50 years on, its easy to claim that Buck was pushing an open door towards fame. Remember though, the Nashville fashion was turning towards lush countrypolitan productions. This West Coast honky tonk was likely to scare a few horses. Thankfully, Buck scared Executives, Radio Stations and DJs, but not his fans. This CD catches Buck at the start of his 60s climb to the pinnacle of success in Country Music.
Great album, thanks to Sundazed for a reissue in superb sound; artwork and booklet to match.
