3.0 out of 5 stars Komeda & Polanski: could do better, 28 Mar 2006
Two celebrated Komeda 60s soundtracks for Polanski on a single disc with a nice booklet. Both soundtracks worked brilliantly in the context of their respective films & the Cul De Sac "electronica" main theme is a classic. However, because a lot of people will be tempted by this item, a few caveats are in order. Each soundtrack really only has one brief composition or theme which is then put through various jazzy variations. If you are interested in 60s Polish jazz then fine, but don't expect lots of freaky weirdness. The sound is a bit murky especially on "Knife" - doubtful if original masters or sources were used (adding to the suspicion of exploitation about this release). Each soundtrack is barely 15 minutes making not much more than half an hour's music in all. They really should have added the other Komeda / Polanski soundtracks - at the very least "Repulsion" & "Fearless Vampire Killers" - to round out the disc. This release is ok as far as it goes, but the need for a properly remastered & annotated "Complete Komeda" collection remains.
