I knew of Billie Holiday. I knew of 'Strange Fruit'. It's had such a profound effect on me since I first heard it.However, I didn't know Billie's life was so tragic, and I didn't know that Frank Sinatra rated Billie as one of his Greatest influences. I didn't know that her style of singing, fraught with emotion and expression changed the way songs were sung - forever. This is quite simply my favourite music purchase this year. I love it. From her early songs, to the music she performed till just before her sad and untimely passing, it's 'elegance and pathos' all rolled into one. I still feel like crying whenever I listen to 'Strange Fruit', but now I have 99 more reasons to embrace my emotions. |
