5.0 out of 5 stars A joy for ever., 24 Aug 2010
This review is from: Twice Reflected Sun (Audio CD)
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever - so goes the old saying. This new album from Kerr and Fagan is certainly a thing of beauty, from the photograph which inspired the title, to the superb musicianship of both artists. But above all, it's the haunting songs by Nancy Kerr which make this album stand out. And although Nancy's use of language is poetic and skilful - phrases such as "blue-jay morning feathering thorny memories" or "Dolerite skies over dry hills, blowing me home" stick in the mind - the songs fit easily into the folk music genre. Indeed, if you did not know they were new, you could easily be lulled into thinking that Nancy and James have uncovered some hitherto unknown collection of music in the roots tradition.

It's possible that some pedantic folk purists will turn up their noses - these are the sort of people who think that folk music should be preserved in aspic - but for those of us who are rather more broad-minded in our outlook, - indeed to anyone who has enjoyed the Kerr and Fagan collections so far - this new addition is very welcome. I can't stop playing it!

5.0 out of 5 stars You will listen to this over and over, 24 Nov 2010

You really will listen to this over and over. There are some lovely songs on hear: slow, quick, harmony and solo voice. Some are quite rousing while others are reflective. I saw these guys live in the summer and they were good fun. Nancy's voice is even better live, and she does actually play the fiddle whilst singing a different melody - very impressive for someone who can't walk and chew gum, like me! They've kept the traditional folk 'feel' but many songs are new. But never fear, you will enjoy all or most of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a class of their own, 4 Oct 2010

In a whirl of activity Nancy has produced nine new songs, each one of which has its own unique feel. Along with two relaxed and beautiful tunes from James this adds up to one deeply satisfying experience with the usual excellent singing from both of them, complemented by stunning musicianship - the keyword here being "complemented". The songs are allowed to speak for themselves and there's no breaking off to show us how clever they are before returning to the song - they don't need to! There is a feeling of "completeness" and maturity about this album - a touch of real class. One can only hope that it won't be missed by people who just want to hear the same old songs ploughed through over and over again with just the odd bit of gimmickry chucked in!!

Beautiful songs, beautifully sung. This duo are accomplished musicians and lovely singers. Their original songs will surely stand the test of time and become the future's folk songs. Nancy & James are in a class of their own.
