This review is from: Side Tracks & Smokers (Audio CD)
Over 70 minutes long, rooted in rock, blues, r'n'b, country and reggae and a nifty title to boot. The CD comprises rare unreleased rough mixes and b-sides from 1973-74, live performances from last year and a new recording, 'Twist of Fate' made in Sweden also last year.
Of the rough mixes, 'Daddy Put The Bomp' is swamp rock at its best and suits Sean Tyla's grizzled, rock 'n' roll voice in all its dirty, funky, steaming splendour.
Martin Belmont's 'I Got You' is probably my all-time favourite Ducks song. A slow, soulful ballad full of longing and profoundly beautiful in its basic simplicity. The horn section compliments the guitar superbly.
Sean's 'Falling For That Woman' is a gut-wrenching ballad full of angst, misery, regret, hate, despair and all manner of torment. Still...better out than in!
Everyone has their favourite Ducks line-up and, although I never saw the original band, I think they would have to go some to beat the current personnel of Martin and Sean augmented by London's best rhythm section, Kevin Foster and Jim Russell.
'Absolutely Sweet Marie' was recorded at Dingwalls, London, last September at Martin's launch party for his own highly acclaimed CD 'The Guest List'. This song, for me, was one of the highlights of an evening which was full of them...what a gig!
Sean sings lead on a gutsy version of 'Johnny Too Bad' (recorded live in Monte Carlo last year). The song originally from 'The Harder They Come' soundtrack. Reggae guitar at its chugging along best.
Johnny Otis' 'Willie and the Hand-Jive' has been covered many times but I have never heard a better cut than this live track. It highlights the musicianship of each member to the hilt. Brilliant.

If you like your music real, it doesn't come more honest than this. These are musicians who can really play and their enthusiasm for their craft is as vibrant now as it was back in the day. I would strongly recommend that you add this CD to your collection.
