5.0 out of 5 stars Paco's peak, 12 Dec 2003
This review is from: Fuente Y Caudal (Audio CD)
No question that this is Paco de Lucia's best. It seamlessly combines tradition, innovation, technical power and respect for flamenco in a way that no other recording by this artist does. The live recording in Madrid (1975) is a re-iteration of past glories, Almoraima (1976) is a decline, and Interpreta Manuel de Falla is a counsel of despair. At this point in his playing career, Paco de Lucia had been working on his music like no-one else in the history of the music. All the juice from the accompaniment of Fosforito and Camaron, etc, comes out here, all the energy of a young man. It is fantastic. Here is the rarely-read and frequently misunderstood road map for the future of flamenco. At the time of this recording, Paco was on a six-lane highway, at the end of which faintly glimmered the Holy Grail, by the time of Almoraima, he had taken a side road which leads to a 2000 foot drop.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Paco's peak, 12 Dec 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Fuente Y Caudal (Audio CD)
Fuente y Caudal is a flamenco landmark without precedent. It condenses all the energy, hard work, and invention of an exceptional youmg player who is pushing back the boundaries in a remarkable way, while still recognisably working within flamenco traditions. You hear the innovations of Nino Ricardo, Mario Escudero, but transformed. You have the earthiness and rhythmic accuracy of Manolo de Huelva, but with a sophistication never before realised. This is the negelected road map for flamenco's future. If Paco de Lucia had died the moment the last note of this recording was captured, his immortality would have been assured. In fact, it might have been enhanced. Immediately subsequent recordings fail to recapture the sublime excellence of Fuente y Caudal. The live Madrid recording (1975) reworks old material, Almoraima (1976) already contains the seeds of later musical derangement, Interpreta Manuel de Falla is a counsel of despair, an admission of failure of artistic imagination. At the time of Fuente y Caudal, Paco de Lucia was cruising donw a six-lane highway staight for the Holy Grail; faint, but glimmeringly visible in the distance: by the time of Almoraima, he had turned on to a side road that led to a 2000 foot drop...

This is a phenomenal album of a master musician - truly one of the greatest guitarists of all time. As someone that struggles to play the guitar, it is incredible to hear the speed, fluency and technical virtuosity that is displayed on this album. every track is stunning and I would recommend this album wholeheartedly to anyone

I grew up with Paco's next album, Almoraima which I love for its fluidity and wild flights of fancy but this is more tied down and disciplined and a wonderful example of Flamenco at its very best.

Paco has never done anything better. Everyone on Earth should own a copy of this. Forget the creatively null commercialism of Beyonce and listen to the real thing.
