This review is from: Famous Places (Audio CD)
Goldmund (aka Keith Kenniff) bewitched me with his 2008 album 'The
Malady Of Elegance'. His 2010 release, 'Famous Places', convinces me
further still that his work is a power for good in the listening world.

Mr Kenniff's principal instrument is the piano and we hear it at the
heart of all 15 of these enchanting pieces; augmented by subtle washes
of electronic sound; sometimes forward in the mix and at other times
submerged in cavernous, subterranean spaces, echoing beneath our feet.

The music is timeless. A piece like 'Conestoga', for example, seems
curiously familiar. Nostalgic without the slightest whiff of hokiness.
A composition full of shadows of half-remembered faces and places.
'Dane Street', too, evokes childhood memories of musical boxes and
rocking horses; its sublimely simple melody supported by the most
fragile of rhythmic patterns. Moonlight shining on silver spider webs
in a secret walled garden at midnight. Truly the stuff of dreams.

The lilting waltz-time miniature 'Grass Rides' is another understated gem.
The interplay between piano and luminous synth cadences is beautifully
conceived. So too the rumbling drone and underwater magic of 'Havelock'.

Although Mr Kenniff's inventions can sit happily in the background
minding their own business it is not their proper place. They deserve
their own special moment of dedicated, uninterrupted time, to savour
their extraordinary ability to generate complex emotional landscapes.

If, at the end of my life, I had to choose one piece of music to hear
whilst the light is fading it might well be 'Jones Beach Dunes'.

Essential.
