After much deliberation I decided to upgrade to this version from my much earlier one.
I find it not as easy to navigate , the older version was much more straightforward an intuitive.
However, that said it does offer many functions to build detailed trees and lots of options on charts, reports etc. Once I got used to the new way of working on this version I am happy with it and would recommend it to budding genealogists as a good way to organise and display your data. The charts for printout are attractive and set everything out very clearly.
A good price for a very detailed product.

I had no problems installing the software and importing my family tree (a bit more than 10.000 individuals) from Family Tree Maker 5.0. I had to resolve about 6.000 place names, though, which is due to the fact that this version doesn't recognise some facts (e.g. godfathers) as facts, but makes them appear as place names. I had already spent some time copying and pasting, and when I tried to back up my file Family Tree Maker crashed and wouldn't open again. Great. I had to remove all the bits and bites manually and reinstall the software. My changes were gone, of course. I imported my data again, changed some places into facts, and tried to close FTM. It just wouldn't close, no matter what I did. I had to pull the plug, and guess what happened when I tried to start FTM again? It doesn't even open. It hasn't opened ever since.

I'm back on version 5.0 again. I really liked the features FTM 2011 has, but I'm ready to downsize. I need software that works!

Something I've been waiting for for a long time was the indexnig of other facts such as Occupation and street names etc. At last with this edition this has now become available and makes a huge difference to the adding of records.

The family tree maker software comes with three month free access to the 865 million records of Ancestry to help you build your family tree, when I telephoned to register the software I was put through to Utah in America where presumably as a result of my English accent I was registered as Canadian without access to the UK records, a second telephone call soon sorted out the problem and I was then upgraded to a free six month access for the inconvenience caused, Ancestry include an automated customer satisfaction survey at the end of each phone call so they obviously do take customer satisfaction seriously, thinking on it might be worthwhile developing a strong regional accent before you make the call to register.

Being a volunteer transcriber of birth, marriage and death indexes for an internet based website over the past nine years, I have always believed access to the records should be free and in the past my family tree research has been via the free route, this however can become a bit limited when you want to view census information online.

I still believe access to the records should be free, but putting principles aside, with this software I found it was so much easier to expand my original tree research and to confirm what I already had, and yes looking back having this software would have saved me a lot of trips to various record offices and a lot of frustration over the years.

I found the software easy to use and suitable for both beginner or the more experienced user but I think it should contain a warning that it can cause time slips, when I first started using it what seemed to me like ten minutes research would easily turn out to be an hour as it is so easy to get carried away with it especially when you have a bit of success finding one of your ancestors.

In general I like the software for how it allow you to organize information and link media. It has some nice reports and good user interfaces. However I have been very disappointed with the level of information available even on the paid subscriptions and even when you get the information there is always a further fee for a copy of the relevant document. Finally the tips the system generates for potential ancestors are almost alway wrong and do not seem to pay any attention to the information provided.

So buy this for the software, but not the data sources behind it.

Some years ago I started researching family history, but did not get very far. Organising the information seemed quite difficult, as well as finding the information and cross-referencing it.

This kit does help. Organising the details is easier than on paper and you can insert photos and even stories about the people.
You don't need high-level p.c. skills to use it, just basic word-processing and emailing skills are sufficient. There is a Companion Guide on the cd but this is quite long and the paper 'Quick Guide' had all the info I needed to get started.

You will still need to research, but there is a three-month free trial of Ancestry.co.uk, which is helpful, but I think if you are serious about creating your family tree you will need to extend that period. You need to give your credit card details when you register for the free trial, so if you don't want to pay for more time, remember to cancel the payment before the 3 months are up!

I found the installation process a little frustrating, as you seem to have to register before being allowed to proceed with the installation, and then I was delayed further by it immediately requiring an update. Also I didn't really want to enter my credit card details to access the free 3-months Ancestry Essentials membership, but there's no choice if you want to make use of it. Having said that, once I got into actually using the product I found it has lots of useful features. You clearly need to know a little of your family history, but if you know some facts, you seem to be able to access more using the links straight through to Ancestry which is very useful. I was a bit disappointed with what you're able to access with the free membership though. Overall though a very useful tool for researching your family tree and keeping a record of what you have discovered.

As I've said on the previous review of the Family Tree Makers, you get what you pay for and whilst there are cheaper products out there this one comes with the bonus of being affiliated with Ancestry.com which also gives you a years free membership. Add to this the ability to create charts as well as some source book material to help make your searching a little easier and its a pretty good product.

The only real downside for this is the instalation which can and has at times required technical assistance from the creators.

Other than that however its easy to use, interactive and keeps things in an easy to follow manner as well as helping you to keep track of family members which hopefully will allow the earlier links to the family to be located which when you get back to preindustrial revolution should be a lot simpler.

Having read the little booklet that comes with Family Tree Maker as instructed while downloading the programme I found getting started more complex than described.I will accept that my computing skills are not the greatest but trying to get to grips with this programme is proving quite frustrating.I will keep trying with help from more computer literate friends,at the moment I cannot seem to make it understand that certain members of my family are still alive.Don't be put off by my first impressions if I get to work it i wiil write a further review.
