If you want a dry commentary on the text don't look here! Bishop Ryle applies the message to your daily life. This may have been written in a different age than ours, but it will make you look at your own life, feel uncomfortable, and move you to pray. If Anglican clergymen today were just a little bit like Ryle it would be worth attending their Churches.

A faithful and true exposition of the gospel of Jesus Christ,

I think it virtually impossible for any man to hold a higher view of the Lord Jesus Christ than Ryle did.He was called 'The best man that ever was in the Church of England', a 'low' Churchman with a very high view of the Savior. Today's Anglican Church wouldn't be in it's pitiful and apostate condition if there were men like Ryle leading it. There again, he knew that apostasy was going to be rife in the latter days; being a pre-millennial believer. A more down to earth, unpretentious Spirit filled teacher you will not find. It is expository, doctrinal and applicable to our daily lives. I believe that whatever your level of faith and grace were before reading this book, they can only increase thereafter. Sadly the 'Christian' best sellers that are filling the bookstores today preach another Jesus.
