Pokemon Pal Park, more than meets the eye!
on 31 July 2010
Pokemon Pal Park WII
I got this game without having read anything about it at all, or even knowing really what the game is about. I got it because I am a Pokemon fan and that was enough for me to buy this. So I want to start off by saying that before I played this game I read some reviews and I became alarmed at some of the things being said. Many reviews said the game was short, for kids and easy. This made me wonder if I should return the game, but I'm so glad I removed the seal and played it.
You play as Pikachu exploring the Pokemon Pal park, which the Pokemon themselves run and maintain. The idea of the game is that each area of the Pal park is a zone looked after by a Pokemon. Each zone of the park has an element and so that zone is looked after by a Pokemon of that element. The Pokemon Pal park was meant to be a friendly fun place where pokemon can visit all zones and play attractions (games) and make friends, but the leaders of the zones have had a falling out. It's your job to go around making friends, changing hearts and bring the Pal park back to it's former glory. This means you travel to the dfferent zones and complete the various attractions their and make the leaders of each zone become friends again so the Pokemon can move freely in the Park. Their is also another thing you have to do, which is collect sky prism pieces, which are something to do with friendship. So that is a basic idea of the storyline....
I only expected to play this game for maybe an hour or so, but I got hooked and ended up playing it for hours. I have to say it's a very addictive game, and very fun to play. As a Pokemon fan it is visauly appealing and fans will love seeing their favourite Pokemon wondering about their respective environments. I myself was very happy and excited when I unlocked new Pokemon in the zones. Graphicaly it's a very good game on the Wii, the Pokemon look great and stand out, I think some of the environments could of done with tweaking, such as some of the ground in the grass zones, but that is me being picky. Otherwise their is some lovely scenery and cute scenes to whitness as the Pokemon chase eachother and move about the areas.
I can speak for all mini games, but so far what attractions I have played have been fun. Although I agree that they may come across as easy, it doesn't mean you will defeat them first try. One review said a 7 year old girl completed this game in two days.....well I'm saying she must not of completed everything. It is easy to 'clear' an attraction and unlock the next part of the game, as you only have to defeat that attraction with one Pokemon. But to actualy ' complete ' an attraction you need to defeat all the requirments, which are mainly time limits you have to beat, and the more pokemon you beat them with the more Pokemon are unlocked for that attraction. It is easy on this game to forget about Pokemon being unlocked and defeating the other time limits, and it is easy to move onto a new zone. But for me, that is not completing the game, to say you have completed it would mean you would of had to of broken all time limits, unlocked all Pokemon and have been to all areas...which makes this game have alot to do on it, and trust me their is alot to do. To complete this game you don't just beat the attractions their are friends to be made and battles to be fought....
This takes me onto the battles, which is a way to make Pokemon friends. This is one of my favourite parts of the game, it is such a interesting addition to this game, one that I hope they will use for a whole new game of Pokemon! When you fight other Pokemon you have so many bars of health and a certain amout of speed and attack. All this is based on if you have spent your berries (money) on increasing these attributes, and training with teachers. When the battle begins you can move and jump around freely and use your attacks, it's a new action type way of fighting. You have to be careful though as you speed may not be upto it, or your oponent could be faster than you....it's best to keep your eye on the ball and be patient, and think what attack would work best. Your opponent has lost when you make their HP reduces to zero.....this idea for me is exciting and it works well in this game. I love the battles, and I think this could work well in a future game...
The other way to make pokemon friends is games of Hide and seek or a quiz. These two are mainly pretty easy. The Hide and Seek one can be a little bit tricky, especialy in the grass zone when trying to find grass Pokemon, they seem to blend in, but if you go the wrong way you get told on screen to not go that way, you do have a time limit though.
An interesting side feature is that you can take photos. Their is no real in game benerfit to doing this, it is just a nice feature to have. You can transfer the photos to and SD card and then do whatever you want with them. It is a shame that their isn't much other use for this, but with that said I have often found myself taking many picrtures and getting the best photos I can to transfer to my SD card.....I just hope that a new Pokemon snap comes out in future :)
Sorry if this review isn't greatly in depth but I haven't completed this game and have only reported on what I have experienced. I will say that this game is easy, but I don't think it is going to be a short as people are saying, not if you are like me and like to complete everything. I want to say that while playing this game I have been really happy and it is really fun. I am 22 years old and I found this game great and a nice refreshing addition to my collection. I would say that this game should be £35 or less, so if you can get it cheaper you should. I think any Pokemon fan should get this game, and those who have read this and love Pokemon, I think you will see some of the features in this game have potentail for future Pokemon games releases....
anyway I hope this was some help. :)
