4.0 out of 5 stars A fine record of the London Blitz, 1 Jun 2003
By A Customer
I first watched this film many years ago,and enjoyed it very much, which is why I bought the video, but I had forgotten just how much the spectacular scenes of the burning buildings, and the dangers of fighting multiple fires during the Blitz could make you feel that you were there with them.James Mason,Finlay Currie, and Tommy Trinder take the main parts in the story, with sub-plots concerning the other characters, with Mervyn Johns, perfect as the local spiv and William Hartnell(Dr Who)sharing his knowledge with his colleagues of the bombing in the Spanish Civil War.It can be a bit wearing with the constant wisecracking of Tommy Trinder in the beginning, but as the film progresses he changes into the perfect fire fighter, much to James Mason(his team leader's approval)and Finlay Currie, the chief of the London Fire Brigade. There is sadness at the end of the film, but also immense pride, which must have struck a chord in the audiences watching this film.It is a fine social record of its time.

Why do they not put these films on tv anymore, great entertainment, and very realistic, for the time, good acting all through, a true classic for film buffs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a movie set in heroisim., 27 Dec 2010
This review is from: The Bells Go Down [DVD] (DVD)
This film comes in the style of the dirty dozen - only this is based on reality not macho-Americano. The plot unfolds as a group of men who, for one reason or another, cannot join the forces at the outbreak of World War 2. They need money or wish to avoid the law and so on, anyway, they meet at the Fire Brigade Medical. With no work available it seems a cushie number. We have training and prep - while the gang go about stealing, drinking, dog racing. Then the blitz starts and the fun and games fade quickly as these ordinary guys discover they are all there is between London burning down. They are the front line - and the last line too! Every hour is filled with danger, nights bring the bombs and the UXBs but still they fight the fires. What had began as a interesting story of a collection of misfits, has become a last stand battle of heroes, where personal danger is not allowed to exist. A brilliant young cast set amid burning docks and notable London sites. This is a movie that you can watch over and over again and for the price its a must 5 star watch.
