5.0 out of 5 stars If you LOVE dance and dancing, this is for you!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, not so great
So many good comments on this documentary, but as a classical ballet fan I don't quite agree.
Why only one out of five stars? The classical ballet dancing is only about 1/5 of the whole film. The contemporary pieces fill the most of it, among them only one piece is worth of watching, which is sort of like street dancing, the rest are all dark, self expressing and...

5.0 out of 5 stars If you LOVE dance and dancing, this is for you!, 2 Dec 2010
This review is from: La Danse - The Paris Ballet Opera [DVD] (DVD)
It is a long documentary on the dancers of the Paris opera. I've seen a few alredy and I think this one is probably the best. What I like about it is that there are NO interviews, everything is filmed as if the camera wasnt there making you feel like you are hiding behind the curtain to look at the dancers rehearsing, or even the dance Director talking about an upcoming event to her subordinates. I really enjoyed it; the only downside is probably the long ballet bit at the end, - beautifully interpreted by Delpine Moussin- but very emotional and probably a bit too long and misplaced in the documentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watching all those rehearsals... fascinating, 16 Aug 2011

An extraordinary fly-on-the-wall view of what goes on at the Paris Opera Ballet. But having at last managed to commandeer the family telly to watch this, I was a bit irritated with the amount of `padding' in this long documentary: numerous shots of sun going up/down over the rooftops of Paris, a man picking up rubbish between the theatre seats, a man hoovering between the theatre seats, a sewer underneath the theatre, something swimming in the sewer underneath the theatre...

Also, the lack of any narration meant you had to wait for the credits at the end before you could put a name to some of the ballets & dancers; some additional subtitles on this might not have gone amiss.

But how wonderful to see the superb Laurent Hilaire (just see him performing Petit's Carmen with Alessandra Ferri on YouTube), now in his role as inspiring ballet master. And watching all those rehearsals and listening to the thought processes behind the movements... it was fasinating. Hence the five stars despite the sewers.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a grabber, 17 Mar 2011

This movie is really amazing. You can see the top world dancers and choreographers at work. Their comments and behavior open your mind to this hardest of all line of business which we, ordinary people never think about while enjoying ballet.
The cinematography is a marvel too. Where else can you see Paris without a single shot of Eifel Tower? How about the honey production on the top of a skyscraper?
There are true brilliant ballet performing episodes. Unfortunately, these episodes are rare and cut rather short. But this is probably the goal of this movie to be a teaser so you want to book a ticket and watch life performance of this, the best in the world ballet troupe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wiseman triumphs again, 16 Aug 2013
This review is from: La Danse - The Paris Ballet Opera [DVD] (DVD)
This is one the best dance documentaries ever. It shows the work of one of the world's greatest ballet companies, its dedication, commitment and sheer joy in what the dancers do. It also shows the administration at work even down to union negotiations. I would recommend anyone interested in dance to buy this. You will watch it many times over.

Article came without a problem and on time. Film is really interesting. More about how the company functions than a typical ballet movie. Beautiful shot of dancers and pieces too. a real treat.

This video is a must for any ballet teacher or enthusiast. I watch it with my students who are inspired by the hard work the artists put in to achieve the end result. Now when I talk about focus they understand what it really means. From an enthusiasts point of view it is just heaven to see these artists in the studio.

5.0 out of 5 stars La Danse -the only way ballet should be, 26 Aug 2010
This review is from: La Danse - The Paris Ballet Opera [DVD] (DVD)
Frederick Wiseman's documentary on the Paris Opera Ballet Company is an absolute jewel -he has done absolute justice to a fantastic company, where only the very best of the highest quality is acceptable, whether it is about dancing, costumes, programme, ...
His documentary is highly sensitive, the camera utterly faitful and precise, in a marvelously delicate unobtrusive way.

If you want 2 hours wrapped in nothing but sheer beauty, excellence, the highest demands and quality in dance and ballet: this is for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful images, 30 Aug 2010
This review is from: La Danse - The Paris Ballet Opera [DVD] (DVD)
A great documentary with beautiful images. I woud like to have seen more indepth on others workers in the company (those who take care of the costumes, for instance)and the preparation of dancers. But very very good.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, not so great, 30 Dec 2010
This review is from: La Danse - The Paris Ballet Opera [DVD] (DVD)
So many good comments on this documentary, but as a classical ballet fan I don't quite agree.
Why only one out of five stars? The classical ballet dancing is only about 1/5 of the whole film. The contemporary pieces fill the most of it, among them only one piece is worth of watching, which is sort of like street dancing, the rest are all dark, self expressing and psycho path like. One piece is especially disturbing: pouring blood over two young kids and putting the blood-tainted buckets on their head, people might think this is child abuse.
Except the part of classical ballet dancing, the whole film is dim and boring. Since it is so much cheaper now, it is still worth of buying for the sake of the classical pieces in there.
