For all those who are ceaselessly amused by guys in monkey suits, please be aware that Zookeeper contains a winning sequence involving a man and a talking gorilla enjoying an evening at T.G.I. Friday's. If the film had run with this low-key lunacy for 90 minutes, many of the movie's failures could have been avoided.

Kevin James once again relies repeatedly on the standard "fat guy falling down" brand of slapstick humour that seems to be where he's most comfortable. If he's going to insist on carrying through with this lazy routine, at least he could work with people who have a flair for visual joke-telling rather than with a director who is better with the actors than he is with finding the right shots and the proper editing rhythms that build anticipation for a big comedic payoff.

Happy Madison, Adam Sandler's company, helped produce Zookeeper, and all of the familiar touches are there. Sandler himself is hoarding pretty much all the good lines as the voice of a monkey who has never met a problem he couldn't solve by using his thumbs.

All of this adds up to a familiar formula that has paid dividends at the box office in the past, but pretty much flat lined creatively just after The Water Boy.

At this point, the Sandler comedy juggernaut is just outright repeating itself, and while Zookeeper is certainly a better movie than a lot of bad comedy movies out there, just evolving past that to being merely forgettable from memorably bad isn't all that much to brag about.

Purchased this to watch during the Christmas holidays. Was expecting better, there were some good laughs but on the whole not the sort of movie that leaves a lasting impression. Kevin James excellent as always, the talking animals just did not do it for me. Even my 7-year old was not that impressed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Night at the Zoo, 22 Nov 2011

This review is from: Zookeeper [DVD] [2011] (DVD)
The Zookeeper of the films title is Griffin Keyes (Kevin James -King of Queens), who, being turned down flat when proposing to his girlfriend Stephanie (Leslie Bibb -Popular) because he isn't the man she wanted to turn him into(or something). Anyway, 5 years of regret & pining for her while Griffin works for the Zoo, a chance encounter at his brothers pre-wedding party, he meets Stephanie again. Where upon he gets help of the wild variety to try & win her back, with mixed consequences.

Overall this film is kind of similar ground to the successful Night At The Museum films, so it is very much a family orientated movie. Kevin James does well with what he's given, in similar romantic style to his role in Hitch where he plays the big guy with the even bigger heart. Rosario Dawson (Seven Pounds) was kinda the standout human actor, lol, she & James had good acting chemistry. I was a little disappointed with the Stephanie "Bimbo" stereotype, but overall i think the moral of the story is a good one for children.

The animals of the Zoo are all voiced by some well & not so well known Hollywood names, with Adam Sandler (His production company Happy Maddison back this film & a bit of movie trivia, Mrs Sandler appears as the TGI Friday waitress), Cher(THE Cher), Nick Nolte(48Hrs), Silvester Stallone(Rocky), Jon Favreau(Couples Retreat) & a few other more American, well known celebs.

In conclusion, this is nice viewing if you want to sit down with the kids & enjoy a movie with them & get something out of it yourself, albeit a bit predictable story wise concerning the romance. It's not anywhere near as good as the original Night at the Museum film, but more on par with the 2nd Museum film. I thought it worked out Okay for what they were trying to achieve, but obviously a Zoo orientated cash in on the Museum franchise at the end of the day. It's enjoyable, but not the best in the genre. Worth a watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Mall Cop, but still funny, 28 April 2014
This review is from: Zookeeper [DVD] [2011] (DVD)
While this is not as good as Kevin James other movies such as Mall Cop or Grown Ups, it still has funny moments, the most memorable when James takes a gorilla to TGI Friday's. Not all of the film is as funny, but it's definitely worth a watch.
