5.0 out of 5 stars Save the Planet? No, save your money!
With ever rising prices for energy, being careful to use electricity efficiently gets ever more important. The "CurrentCost" ENVI unit and its simple to fit parts are an easy way to get an understanding of you electricity use in real time so you can do something about it. Don't wait for the shocking bill to come, see what the cost is now!

This review is from: Current Cost Black ENVI unit + Data Cable RJ45 to USB Bundle CCPM001 compatible with Google PowerMeter (Electronics)

I chose this product specifically because all the marketing suggested you could upload the usage data to your PC. After downloading, installing and trying out four of the 3rd party applications from the current cost website and not being able to make them work, I gave up on this - MY time and energy is also scarce.
I was equally disappointed with the Google PowerMeter linkup - it works, but only in real-time, and it seems complete nonsense to have a PC on 24/7, to monitor how you can save electricity!

Very simple product to install (take less than 30 minutes to set up) and basic info clearly displayed but with the capability to allow the more knowledgeable to really get to grips with the data. Free software is available to analyse your consumption in detail (if you want to do that sort of thing), even via the WEB and probably be even more efficient! Add the individual monitors if you need to track down where energy is going but is not clear from the ENVI. You can do without by just going around switching off things and noting the drop but this is not always convenient. Great product which will quickly pay for itself if you use the information it provides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cut your electricity bills, save the planet, 25 Oct 2010

I have the EON-branded "Energy Fit" version of this device which you can get free with EON on some tariffs. Other than the branding it's the same kit.

Installation was a breeze, the display is easy to read, and once set up it's maintenance-free. The display shows instant power usage (in watts), the cost of that (per hour), and your usage over the last 1/7/30 days. There's also a graphical indication of how your usage compares over the past morning/afternoon/evening, the current time and temperature. It also appears to be able to monitor the usage of 3 individual devices (through the plug-in adapters sold separately here on Amazon).

However the real beauty of this device is seeing how much electricity you are using in real time - it really makes you think about your energy costs, and whether all those little devices you may have humming away in the corners of your house really need to be on or not. After some testing I was able to reduce my "base load" (electricity usage with no major appliances running) by around 30%, just by switching off properly things that I had on standby, mobile phone chargers I left plugged in with nothing attached, and so on.

The integration with Google Powermeter is great for long-term graphing of your power usage, but requires a PC to be turned on the whole time (unless you buy the separate broadband plug-in dongle), which slightly tarnishes its green credentials. The connection for this is RJ45 (from the device) to USB (on the PC), and some basic driver software needs to be installed on the PC. However the main advantage of Google Powermeter is by showing you the trends over time, even when you're out of the house... I saw a massive spike earlier today and thought "what was that?" - the answer was the washing machine. I'll be doing more 30 degree washes in future I think...

In short - buy one. You'll make your money back in months if not weeks in lower electricity bills, and you'll be helping to save the planet too.

Really nice product! Everything is great in it, the only issue is the lack of official app to use it on a mac and transfer data to google powermeter (So I decided to make my own).
I thought the shipping fees where pretty high too.
