The makers of THIS DVD should be done under the Trade Descriptions Act or False Representation for stating on the front of the DVD Cover "Inspired by horrifying true events" when the only "true character" it is actually based on is one MADE-UP, that is, in the mind of Horror writer/director Jake Kennedy. That is a FICTIONAL CHARACTER?
So NONE of the events or characters ARE TRUE in this plot, which doesn't even amount to a story about a young financially desperate mother Amelia who takes on a job as a stripper when her friend can't keep a booking and ends-up in the hands of a Sado-Masochistic loony-tune who wants to cut bits off her and other young girls as well as himself in order to book his entrance and theirs into the Pearly Gates?
Bad Screenplay,Awful Acting especially from the female Asian looking Guard Mrs.Wood who is so lifeless she looks as if she's been embalmed.Just who is supposed to be holding the hand-held camera when ALL Amelias friends have been Murdered??? Avoid at all costs!!

1.0 out of 5 stars dvd horror/gore, 15 Sep 2010

I found this film sub standard as far as acting, it doesnt take an oscar winning performance to sit and scream and cry most of the time. the story line so-so, but over all not even the scenes were done realistically and how would a girl supposedly terrified for her life be able to hold a video camera steady and follow the perpetrators of all the gore-ish deeds. There is nothing in my mind to recommend this dvd, there are much more sophisticated gore/horror films out there.

1.0 out of 5 stars "Starring" Jason Connery, 5 May 2011
By
This review is from: Penance [DVD] (DVD)
If your idea of a cracking night in is a film in which some bloke with a nasty case of eczema saws his own balls off, knock yourself out... purchase 'Penance'.

If your idea of cinematic heaven is a film in which touted "star" Jason Connery doesn't turn up until half way through the end credits in a scene that's completely unnecessary (no, seriously)... by all means, this is the film for you.

If you're the kind of person who masks their burning, near-homicidal hatred of women beneath a veneer of enjoying "extreme" films, congratulations... You've found your 'Citizen Kane'.

If, however, you value things like plot, script, acting, and genuine scares in your horror films, you'll be sorely disappointed. 'Penance' is a terrible film. It's the dreary end result of a cultural cul-de-sac that started with David Fincher's excellent 'Seven', and continued through tired ripoffs like 'Saw' and the odd highlights like Eli Roth's 'Hostel'. Let me get one thing straight... Not all of the so-called "gorno" or "extreme" horror films are bad. The French film 'Martyrs' is a very tough watch, but is thought-provoking and excellently made. Some of the 'Saw' films were actually quite fun in the cinema, in a silly, gory kind of way.

'Penance' tries to riff off its predecessors, but unfortunately appears to have been made by a monkey. A retarded, woman-hating monkey. With a fetish for genital mutilation.

Incredibly, this film allegedly cost as much ($1.5million) as the flawed but thoroughly enjoyable 'Insidious'. Now, while 'Insidious' was a 15 certificate in the UK, and a PG13 in the US, it's far more disturbing and genuinely scary than this exploitative pile of tosh.

One to avoid, even if you're into this kind of thing.

1.0 out of 5 stars They dont get much worse..., 14 Nov 2010

The first 20 mins has terrible acting and if its supposed to be sexy it failed miserably though the susy girl is pretty hot (much hotter than the main Amelia girl anyway).

It gets more interesting when the main girl gets taken to secret location where everyone has cameras...Susy is there as well but how is never explained. The main girl is obsessed with taking pictures and getting evidence..i know that was her job before she did this but come on!! its ridiculous. she wants to take pictures of everything instead of trying to escape. She is also a master of stealth, this girl can walk around the place undetected even if people are a few foot away.

There is hardly any gore but there is one scene that is hard to watch..at least if you are a guy! Hardly any nudity either. At least most films like this have hot girls running around naked for no reason but nope none of that here either. Her "3rd test" is stupid as well. they must have known she saw what happened to the last girl on the third test and they must have known about the knife. But it seems not. But by this point if you are still awake you are beyond caring anyway.
