One of the first tribute albums I ever bought and one of the only ones I still regularly listen to. This compilation introduced me to the likes of Alice Donut and Neurosis. As hard as it may be to believe, most of the artists add something to the original tracks, rather than detracting from them - whether it's Faith No More's lounge-band interpretation of Let's Lynch the Landlord, or Neurosis' death/industrial metal version of Saturday Night Holocaust - you can't help but think that the Kennedys' tracks have been improved-on.
High-lights include the "more out of tune than the original" Ill in the Head by Victim's Family, and the brilliantly surreal Insight by Kramer (god only knows where the interview came from which backs the track). Equally, Moon over Marin could have been written for melodic noise band Les Thugs - tinnily beautiful and reminiscent of Revolver at their best.
On the whole it is difficult to fault. It comes with the usual Alternative Tentacles propaganda and is infused with the biting satire and unconventional humour of both the band and the label. I'd buy this now, and get a piece of subversive music history before it's too late. Sublime.
