2.0 out of 5 stars Bad "humor" put me right off
I tried to see past the terrible lads humor - but had to give up by chapter 3. - Don't get me wrong I like a good laugh... but that's my point: either be funny, or don't bother.

The last straw for me came on page 65: on sex with your pregnant partner - "It isn't the kind of threesome they (expectant fathers) had in mind as their ultimate fantasy".
The info...

I have read of few books for dads on pregnancy and most have been quite jokey and blokey. Recently released this book was like a breath of fresh air. This book does have a really great sense of humour and speaks to dads in their language but it is no way flippant. The book is packed with expert tips from a male midwife, obstetricians, psychologists and `a man who knows a lot about car seats'

Each chapter roughly follows the pregnancy as it should progress and gives an idea of how the child is developing in the womb, how your partner is feeling and why she is in the mood she is and it contains expert advice and tips to help you make the right decisions. Lots of dads also share their story.

I think this book is fab...so easy to read, interesting and useful. It also shows great empathy towards a woman's experience and I felt the author really cared about mum being fully supported.

Some really useful parts of the book (often not addressed) are dealing with miscarriage, an explanation of the facts of life, a conversion chart for baby weights, a discussion of the dad dreaded nappies, a little chapter entitled when bump stops the grind (SEX!) And many other really useful bits every woman would want someone sensible to chat to her partner about.

The book also has a brilliant glossary at the back so all those new confusing words are explained. The last words in this book go to the mums in a nifty little section entitled the `Dos and don'ts of being a new dad according to new mums.' This is my favourite:

Don't sit next to your partner while she is breast feeding, put the TV on sports news move the remote put of reach then go upstairs out of earshot while we're left unable to move watching the bloody football for 40 minutes!

Oh how I wish someone had told my fella this!

Overall, I found this to be a very funny, immensely sensitive and deeply informative read. I would highly recommend this book to new dads.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good the wife nicked it to read!, 24 July 2010

I am a first time dad and my wife is 5000 miles away so dont get to be with her enough, but only for a while longer, but i wanted to understand what she is going through so i can help her. well as best as i can.

I found this book by accident, but liked the reviews that had been written so i ordered it. on the first night of getting it i was tired, but thought i should read at least a couple of pages, but 20 pages later!!! wow. ok so i was past the bit that the book starts with the 0 to 8 weeks bit, but everything it said about was on the money for what my wife had gone through. so much so it could have been written about her experiences.

then chatting with her i was reading parts of the book to her about her up coming tests and she was telling me that my book was so much better and written in a better way than the book that she has about it. so being the big old softy i am i posted it out and ordered me a second one.

got to say if the rest of the book is as good and well informed as what i have read then its worth every penny and more.

it uses everyday speak and nothing is overly complicated and the humour is refreshing also.

I would seriously recomend this book to any guy that is going to be a dad or is hoping him and his partner will be having a baby its a really good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Vicky Iovine (Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy) - for MEN, 9 Jun 2010
If you're a mum-to-be and you've read Vicky Iovine's book A Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy and enjoyed that, this is the perfect book for your partner. It's got a great sense of humour and will even have you laughing out loud at points. But unlike the other books that are humorous, this one is packed full of real information, the kind of info other for-dads books just don't have. This book doesn't just view the dad as an accessory, it gives him the central role he deserves.

Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Blokes point of view, 11 Dec 2011
This book is an easy read written with humour, insight and just the right level of information without being condescending. The cost of baby products is now starting to get a bit dated but still provides helpful estimates.

Overall the discounted price was just right compared to some of the bigger, fatter and (dare I say) duller books that my wife got. Delvery was quick and up to usual Amazon standards. As an expectant father I am glad I got this book.

Everything is in plain english so makes it easy to understand and tells of all the highs and possible lows of pregnancy. Brill book and brill price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun book, 14 Oct 2011

This is a fun read. It can be a little cringy at times, and lacks real in depth info, but it is not what the book is all about. It's great to give you an insight into what to expect as a bloke, and gives you enough details on what is going on with your partner through all the stages.
Makes great light reading. I often read a couple of chapters before bed, and just read the ones that were relevant to my wife's stage in the pregnancy.
Worth a read if you don't want to get bogged down in all the real nitty gritty but want a good understanding of what is going on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lively, fun and informative - the only book new dads have to read, 13 Sep 2011
By
K. Hussain (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
I bought this as a gift on the basis of all the positive reviews and I have to say the good reviews were right. This is full of just the right kind of advice that expectant and new fathers need. It's funny and sensitive, upbeat and practical. It's clearly written by a dad for dads and this will appeal to all real fathers out there. The advice is delivered with fun and compassion but is backed up by lots of practical advice from experts at the top of their field. If you are a new dad or a dad-in-waitng, then this is the only book you'll need to read

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informative, 19 Aug 2011

(VINE VOICE)
I've just become a Dad and spent the 9 months before reading a chapter or so each month.

This is a really useful book for the clueless Dad to be and full of (reasonably) up-to-date information for UK dads (I say reasonably up to date because it still bears reference to child savings accouts, etc. which the Coservatives have changed or scrapped).

It approaches everything with a sense of humour tinged with seriousness.

I enjoyed reading it and my wife found it useful to know what to expect to!

However....nothing could prepare you for the reality check of having a newborn in your house for the first time - but it gets better (9 weeks on anyway!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Brill!, 13 Aug 2011
I brought this for my husband when expecting our first baby.
From the product information it sounded like something he was in need of - male advice!
With not having any male friends that had children of their own I was getting impression he was feeling left out of the loop and abit confused - more so because he didn't really want to ask me all those questions that even I hated answering.
Instead I got him this as a 'pre-daddy' father's day present and he loves it!
Never puts the book down. His method was to read it bits at a time to follow my pregnancy.
Really glad I brought it for him, as it seems to have given him the 'secret inside information'.
I've even had a look through it and was rather surprise at how well it was written - perfect for men with plently of humour to keep the subject light and interesting.
Brill for any first time dad!
