5.0 out of 5 stars A true story about Matthew Shepard
This is really a very touching movie, one of the best I have seen. I can related to my own feelings at his age. You watch this movie and you see the reality of the life of almost each gay born boy, the way parents should accept and handle the situation, how the people around act,... .If somebody doesn't know what gay life is at the young age, even the reality of this...

3.0 out of 5 stars A real horror !
It's a true horror. Unfortunately it's not written by Mr. Alfred Hitchcock, but by real life. I'm shocked what can happen in the beginning of a new millenium...
The DVD is in noticeably weaker picture quality and titles for deafs are missing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true story about Matthew Shepard, 31 Dec 2010
This review is from: Matthew Shepard Story [DVD] [2010] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This is really a very touching movie, one of the best I have seen. I can related to my own feelings at his age. You watch this movie and you see the reality of the life of almost each gay born boy, the way parents should accept and handle the situation, how the people around act,... .If somebody doesn't know what gay life is at the young age, even the reality of this movie is the murder on Matt, this sure is a great help to see how the inner life of a young gay boy is. I recommend this movie not only for the fact that NOBODY should judge somebody on his sexuality, sure not murder somebody for it, this hate murder and the life of Matthew Shepard, should be a lesson for many of us to try to understand what's going on in youngster with the discovery of the gay sexuality.

The film packs an emotional punch that hits more widely than the facts it works with. The facts deal with the brutal beating of Matthew Shepard, which leads to his death. His being gay played a role in this attack; therefore the attack is approached as a hate crime. As Wyoming, Matthew's home state, did not have legislation about hate crimes at the time, this particular case became an important reason to write new relevant laws.

The major section of the film deals with the court case of one of the attackers, Aaron McKinney, and focuses on the response of Matthew's parents. Amongst all the factors making this an ordeal for them, they have to discuss the possibility of a plea bargain by the accused which will sentence him to life in prison, not death.

Through flashbacks Matthew's growing up is explored, as well as his relationship with his parents and friends. These friends support the parents in a stunning visual display at the court case to soften the impact of protesters loudly claiming that Matthew as gay man was sinful.

Anyone who sympathises with victims of physical attacks, whether "simply" a crime or motivated by hate and discrimination, will respond to the emotions portrayed. The film is a strong cry to everyone to eliminate hate crimes of all kinds from our society - in that sense it is healing as well, as it forces one to think of how to respond to this despicable deed of senseless murder. At long last the film is released on DVD - it is high time that it reaches the DVD audience.

4.0 out of 5 stars More important than ever to spread message of tolerance., 12 Oct 2010

This review is from: Matthew Shepard Story [DVD] [2010] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This film follows the period before, during, and after the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, who was tied to a fence on remote Wyoming farmland, and beaten close to death, by two men who had actively gone out to find a homosexual and cause him harm. Matthew Shepard died soon after he was found, covered in blood. The case attracted attention across the US due to the brutality of the hate crime. Stockard Channing & Sam Waterson play the parents of Matthew, and both portray the mix of anger & grief so well. They argue with each other, they do not always agree on issues relating to the court case. Stockard Channing as the mother in particular really makes your heart ache, as she had sat in the courtroom day after day listening to every horrifying detail of how her son died. Shane Meier plays the role of Matthew Shepard, and also puts in a very good performance. The film moves quickly between flashbacks and the present,is well shot and edited. Highly recommended, especially since right now in 2010, hate crimes do not seem to be lessening. In Belgrade, rioting recently broke out at a gay rights parade, and in the US, at least 5 teenage boys have killed themselves after homophobic bullying. This film is as important now as it was when it was released, perhaps even more so. An excellent film. This DVD release does not include any extra features or documentaries.

After reading Judy Shepards book the meaning of matthew and being very moved by it I thought I'd give the film a try too. The film gripped me from start to finish and goes all the way through the last years of Matt's life upto his horrific murder. The film is an honest and frank account of a life cut far too short....

I can't recommend it enough

R.I.P Matt Shepard,

I thought it had arrived. But this time it took some before it landed in my mail box. I have seen the film, but it is a film you will see over and over again. Hoping that the World some day will accept you no matter WHO you love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Moving but the father had too much resentment in his heart, 31 Aug 2013

This review is from: Matthew Shepard Story [DVD] [2010] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This is a short film about a young man who was the victim of some homophobic hatred. No matter what the circumstances could have been, no matter what the condition, language or behavior everyone could have demonstrated, killing someone just because he is different is simply absurd. And I say any difference cannot justify killing him, her or them illegally or legally. All act of lethal violence against any one has no justification at all.

But in this film, in this case the emphasis is not so much set on the son who finds out he is gay in high school, probably when he went to his first homecoming dance with a girl he could not cope with, but about his parents who had accepted this fact, about the parents after his death, after the first part of the trial that convicted the killer, a young man like Matthew, of the crime, and before the second part of the trial when the jury is going to decide on the sentence. The death penalty is sure but a plea can always be accepted by the parents.

The question is what can the parents do? What would Matthew tell them to do? Will he require the death penalty or will he request mercy for his killer? If Matthew was a beautiful person;, an intelligent person, a gracious person, he must have known violence leads to violence and some one some time must stop the hate machine and say: "Okay, you killed me. Okay you meant to kill me and you abandoned me in a place where I took two days to bleed to death, to die, before my body was discovered. Okay you intended to kill and to torture. But you did all that from a crooked belief that people who are different have to be gotten rid of and that did not come from you, and anyway I cannot find closure and peace in your death. I can only find closure and peace in forgiving you and hoping you will forgive yourself.

I regret a little the father decided to follow another line in front of the court and to accept to show mercy and take the plea from the defense but for the wrong reason, so that the killer may suffer remembering his crime all along his long life. It does not even matter whether the murderer does or not. What matters is what the world can remember from Matthew, the message he can transmit to us from beyond his grave, from beyond his torturing chamber, from beyond the long agony and suffering ending in death. And that message has to be a message of mercy that may lead some people to realizing the way out in a divided situation is necessarily to come to terms with the difficulty and moving on towards more tolerance and more understanding.

But the message is for us today that we have to put that division, that antagonism behind us and move towards providing everyone in this global society of ours with the same rights and the same duties, no matter what their personal choices may be. But remember: we cannot respect something, a religion, a sexual orientation, a culture, an ethnic origin, or whatever you may think of, if we do not know about it, if it is kept and has to be kept locked up in a closet.

A very strong film on a situation that will little by little tend to move away and get lost behind us and bygones will have to be bygones. The day is close when this will happen, will be the case.

3.0 out of 5 stars Movie great transfer to DVD poor, 16 Oct 2011

This review is from: Matthew Shepard Story [DVD] [2010] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
The touching story of Matthew Shepherd is brialliantly done without too much focus on emotional schmalz, so is well worth watching - however, if you have high quality equipment I found the quality of the transfer to dvd very poor with poor resolution of dark images despite being able to upscale it to 1080p.

Saw this film a while ago and it made such an impact that I got involved with the Matthew Shepard Foundation. It's a great piece about why people fight for justice and why we shoulld never give up, even if our worst fears are justified.
