However you think as far as History, Philosophy and Theology are concerned you cannot avoid Aquinas. He is a giant in this academic world and has had a most profound effect on world thought. He is still revered in the Catholic wolrd of course and rightly so. As an evangelical I also admire him immensley for his scholarship and the breadth of his vision. Even if you do not thrill when Philosophy is mentioned, and many don't you could do a lot worse than to dip into Aquinas. You may find him to be surprisingle simple in explaining compled matters.
