This review is from: RENMIN PARK (Audio CD)
Renmin Park is another interesting experiment from the band, this time inspired by Michael Timmins' experiences in China. There are two songs written by Chinese musicians, I Cannot Sit Sadly By Your Side by Zuoxiao Zuzhou; My Fall written by Xu Wie. Zuoxiao Zuzhou also provides vocals on A Walk In the Park - another strange experience like the spoken piece on At The End Of Paths Taken. Happily these are all integrated into the Cowboy Junkies grungy groove and don't make this into a silly fake-Oriental record. The intro soundscape piece and the coda are a little weird and un-Junkies, but don't be put off. There are some great tunes - Renmin Park and My Little Dark Heart will appeal to Junkies fans of all eras, as well as the two songs by the Chinese writers. The other songs are less immediately appealing, but there's nothing that grates on the ears. It doesn't have the atmosphere of the The Trinity Session or the pop appeal of Caution Horses, but it's good to see the band continuing to experiment (fans of the early more acoustic material are recommended to check out the band's website and download Margo's Corner - Ty Tyrfu Sessions if they haven't already).
