Shadwell (late 17th century) was writing for an English audience, whose tastes were apparently different from Molière's, and so he adapted the story for his own public. It's a good play (after all, it was taken from Molière!), but you come away in the end thinking that for all of Molière's fixed conventions for farce, which at times may look over worn today, he nonetheless was much the better master of theatre and comedy.
