The return of Tony Bennett
on 30 December 2011
The 50s and 60s were the decades of Tony Bennett who I first heard with a single called Close Your Eyes which remained an all time favorite and is now in Crooners Rock.
Amazingly its missed off the Proper Box which takes in all the early singles like Boulevard of Broken Hearts and which could be the earliest song revisited here
I figured Bennett was a rock n roll singer after Close Your Eyes-a song which had been made in the 40s by Al Bowlly and Vera Lynn but had a socking backbeat-when he made In the middle of an Island but the albums were not quite like Pat Boone ones as they were full of standards.
This seemed to be his true forte after the country and RnR songs and which he stuck with right to the Duets albums
Only new songs he covered were the odd Lennon McCartney or bossa nova things
He's now 85,has appeared at Glastonbury and has the same guvenor voice at an age when many guys are in retirement homes.
For the Duets albums the artists follow his rules-he's not about to sing their songs
