4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasing, 1 July 2010

This is the sixth album from the excellent Ms Richey and while it will probably not convert many, it does please long time fans like me.

That's not to say that this is at all a bad record, far from it, (a very accomplished performance), it's mainly that, it just does not have any stand out tracks.

If you want to start with Kim Richey go to 2002's "Rise" or the "Collection" from 2004 as they her best work by far.

Back to "Wreck Your Wheels" though, what you can say is that this is bit of change in direction for Kim as previously she was a bit pidgeon holed as a country singer, which is not accurate as she is more than that with wide spectrum of material, which I must say is adequately displayed here.

On this album she has co written all of the songs with different people, from Boo Hewerdine, Will Kimbrough, the late Tim Kreckle and Mark Olson (ex Jayhawks and co performer with Gary Louris)

Best tracks for me are "When The Circus Comes To Town" and "In The Years To Come" neither of which are country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you Bob Harris, 10 Sep 2010

I heard Kim Richey live on Bob's Country programme a couple of weeks ago and particularly liked the song Careful How You Go, so downloaded the album pretty much based on that. This is a gem of an album, not at all "samey" from song to song and contains some great tracks. Keys is a plaintive song, Leaving 49 the kind of song that you can't keep still to, and When the circus comes to town equally outstanding. I've since also downloaded Collection which is taking time to grow on me, unlike Wheels which was an instant resonation. This is a fine album, simply recorded with some very strong songs. Now I can't wait to see her live.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, 23 Aug 2010

Thoroughly enjoying this album, a bit of a more chilled feel to it but still with some good uptempo songs like 'Leaving 49'. I was fortunate to hear some of these live and the recordings don't disappoint. Stand-out tracks: 'Careful How you Go' is a beautiful capture of a place and time and 'keys' is effective in its simplicity. Try it!

More good tunes from Kim. Having seen her live quite a few time I could not say no to the album. I am still one behind. Too much to listen to.On early listens the title track, "careful how you go" and for a while make an impression. There is some nice playing on both "keys" and "when the circus comes to town". It has been on the car CD player a fair bit and held its own against popular regular favorites including Kim's first two CD's. Worthwhile.

Kim Richey - Wreck Your Wheels (Lojinx)
Despite top 10 albums in Time Magazine, countless 5 star reviews and a couple of Grammy nods, Kim Richey's never become the household name her friends and fans expected. With hindsight, she was probably too pop for the country charts, and too country to cut it with the pop kids. If you fall between two stools in the music biz, there's rarely anyone ready with a parachute.

Richey's latest, Wreck Your Wheels, was recorded in Nashville (produced by Neilson Hubbard) and is a little rootsier than 2007's Chinese Boxes album. Although, she still has a way with a clean pop hook, and her songwriting talents remain undiminished. Standout tracks, "Leaving 49" and "Careful How You Go" would both sound perfectly at home on daytime BBC Radio 2. 8/10.
